OCLC PRODUCT OF THE MONTH : OCLC CONNEXION CLIENT

THE WINDOWS-BASED CLIENT INTERFACE TO OCLC CONNEXION IS NOW AVAILABLE!  

This first release includes interactive online cataloging functionality along with macros and labels. Much more will be added to the client in future phases, including a macro recorder, additional authorities functionality, local files, and batch processing.

The client software is available for free download to OCLC Cataloging members from the Connexion client Web site at <http://www.oclc.org/connexion/interface/client/>. You can download and begin using the client with your existing cataloging authorization and password. The Web site also includes a tutorial, documentation, a list of upcoming enhancements, and tips to help Passport users migrate.

Connexion is OCLC's flagship cataloging service, a powerful, flexible suite of tools with built-in access to WorldCat, the world's largest bibliographic database. Both this Windows-based client interface and a Web-based browser interface are available, and you can pick the interface of your choice. Connexion offers many new features including an enhanced save file, no record size limitations, linked headings from bibliographic records to authority records, keyword searching in the Authority File and more. Passport End-of-Life for Cataloging
OCLC continues to add functionality to Connexion, which will eventually replace all current cataloging interfaces. Initially, OCLC is focusing on adding Passport functionality to Connexion, since Passport for cataloging use will be discontinued in the future. Previously, the end-of-life for Passport for cataloging was announced as December 31, 2003. This has now been extended, and OCLC will provide six months advance notice of the new date. Although the new end-of-life date has not been set, OCLC has determined that it will not be before September 2004.

Training
NEBASE has scheduled sessions for the "OCLC Connexion: Client Interface for Cataloging" workshop in Hastings, Kearney, Lincoln, Norfolk and Omaha.

All sessions will include a lecture and demonstration as well as hands-on time and will be conducted by Christa Burns, OCLC Member Services Coordinator for NEBASE. Participants will receive three hours of Continuing Education credit.

OCLC CUSTOMER SATISFACTION SURVEY

OCLC is conducting its semi-annual study among libraries to measure satisfaction with OCLC and their Regional Networks from September 17th - November 21st.

A representative sample of libraries will be asked to participate. The letters will be addressed to your Head of Technical Services and Head of Public Services and will be from Joanne Cantrell in Global Business Research at OCLC.

Your library may receive this letter and questionnaire via mail inviting you to participate during that time, and we encourage you to take the time to do so. Your opinions will help OCLC provide products and services that meet the needs of libraries, as well as help us meet your more local needs with respect to OCLC's products and services.

All information will be kept strictly confidential. Results will only be provided to OCLC and NEBASE, your regional network, in summary form.

TAKE A LOOK AT THE POWER AND REACH OF LIBRARIES

A new OCLC report shows that libraries are logistics experts, valued destinations, economic engines and home to a vibrant and sizable profession.

Five times more people visit U.S. public libraries each year than attend sporting events. Each day, libraries circulate nearly 4 times as many items as Amazon ships-and about the same number as FedEx ships in a day. Annual purchases by U.S. libraries exceed U.S. spending on videos, athletic footwear and bars and taverns.

"Libraries: How they stack up" provides a snapshot of the impact of libraries and some comparisons of library activities to other sectors, professions and destinations in the worldwide economy.

OCLC LAUNCHES NEW WEB SITE

On September 15, a new OCLC.org site went live. The new site was designed based on suggestions from librarians and includes not only improved content but also entirely new areas.  Goals of the new site: cleaner design, easier navigation, better content organization, new features and sections.

Among the changes:

  • A new area has been created around important topics for the Community <http://www.oclc.org/community/>, including readings, links and discussion boards.

  • Content relating to training and events has been consolidated and restructured within Professional Development <http://www.oclc.org/education/default.htm>, including many materials previously promoted through the OCLC Institute.

  • The work of OCLC Research <http://www.oclc.org/research/default.htm> is showcased prominently.

  • Product and Services <http://www.oclc.org/services/default.htm> marketing content has been revised and updated.

  • Content related to Documentation and Support <http://www.oclc.org/support/default.htm> has been moved and consolidated into a common format.

  • Several new non-English sites <http://www.oclc.org/global/default.htm> have been created so members and users around the world can take advantage of the OCLC cooperative anywhere they live and work.

OPEN WORLDCAT PILOT

OCLC to make library collections more visible and accessible on the Internet

The Open WorldCat pilot is a year-long initiative that makes library resources available from nonlibrary Web sites. The pilot aims to test the effectiveness of Web search engines in guiding users to library-owned materials, making libraries more visible to Web users and more accessible from the Web sites many people turn to first.

We're happy to report the availability of the new Open WorldCat pilot Web site at <http://www.worldcatlibraries.org>.  Librarians may consult this site for up-to-date information about the pilot in the coming months.

The Open WorldCat pilot site includes a description of the pilot and how it works as well as a list of frequently asked questions that will be updated regularly. In addition, librarians may use a feedback form on the site to:

  • notify OCLC that they want to participate in, or withdraw from, the pilot

  • add or correct URLs that lead to information about their institution

  • submit comments about the pilot

ADVANCE NOTICE OF DISCONTINUATION OF THE CINAHL DATABASE

Following its recent acquisition of CINAHL Information Systems, EBSCO has informed OCLC of its intention to terminate its contract to distribute the CINAHL database on OCLC FirstSearch.

Consequently, per-search access to the CINAHL database will be discontinued effective from Wednesday, December 10, 2003. All current subscriptions will be honored until the expiration date and will not be renewed.

Your library might consider MEDLINE, HealthInfo, and MDXHealth Digest as possible alternatives for health, nursing and wellness information. Detailed information about these databases can be found on the FirstSearch website at <http://www.oclc.org/firstsearch/content/databases/databaselist.htm>.

OCLC FIRSTSEARCH SERVICE ENHANCEMENTS

SEPTEMBER 2003 ENHANCEMENTS

FIRSTSEARCH FUNCTIONALITY AND INTERFACE

FirstSearch Staff Resource Sharing View
A new view of FirstSearch now allows resource sharing staff to create full ILL requests with lenders from within FirstSearch. Library staff can access the resource sharing view from a link in the FirstSearch interface or by logging in to FirstSearch using their ILL authorization and password. Institutions with one ILL authorization and one FirstSearch authorization have had their authorizations linked by OCLC; other libraries will need to link their authorizations via the FirstSearch administrative module.

Z39.50 Portal Added to OCLC FirstSearch Service
The OCLC FirstSearch service now includes an optional Z39.50 portal. This portal enables libraries to present Z39.50-compliant local catalogs and other Z39.50-compliant databases of local interest within the FirstSearch interface for search and display. This portal includes such features as links to WorldCat holdings, links to FirstSearch full text and the ability to create resource sharing requests. Implementing the portal can increase the visibility/utility of local collections by allowing end-users to search their OPAC while searching FirstSearch databases. Contact NEBASE for details.

FIRSTSEARCH CUSTOMIZATION (Administrative Module)

FirstSearch Adds Outbound Linking to CISTI for Document Delivery
FirstSearch administrators may now use the FirstSearch administrative module to activate a link that lets users order documents during a FirstSearch search session from the Canadian Institute for Scientific and Technical Information (CISTI), a full-text document supplier. When this purchase option is enabled, links appear in detailed records for citations for which the institution does not make full text available through the FirstSearch service. If a library wants to provide access to CISTI to its users, the FirstSearch administrator may enable the option in the Resource Linking - Outbound Linking area of the administrative module. The default for linking to CISTI is OFF. When a user clicks on the link labeled Order Article from CISTI, she will access the CISTI site from within FirstSearch. After creating a profile, the user may logon to CISTI to purchase the article with her personal credit card, and return to FirstSearch by clicking the Return button.

FIRSTSEARCH CONTENT

64 Journals Added to OCLC FirstSearch Electronic Collections Online
Sixty-four new journals from twenty publishers have been added to OCLC FirstSearch Electronic Collections Online, bringing the online total to 4,701 journals available. The new titles and their ISSNs are available at <http://www2.oclc.org/oclc/fseco/index.asp>.

Wilson Select Plus Database Enhanced with Images, New Indexes
Users of the Wilson Select Plus database now have the option of viewing the full text of the articles they retrieve in new HTML and PDF formats. Images of articles such as charts, tables, photographs, etc. from the original publications are available to FirstSearch users wherever the H.W. Wilson Company has been able to secure rights to display them in the database. In the coming months the images will be made available from other databases in FirstSearch that link to full text in Wilson Select Plus.

Additionally, new indexes have been added to the Wilson Select Plus database in the Advanced and Expert search options that make it easier for users to locate materials most relevant to their research. These indexes include the Notes and Language Phrase indexes in Advanced Search and Intended Audience Phrase, Notes, and Subject All in Expert Search. Users can also limit their searches to citations in peer-reviewed journals by selecting the new Reviewed Journal limit option in the Advanced and Expert search screens.

More Databases Available for Inbound Linking to Full Text
Users whose libraries have implemented SFX Open URL systems can now link to the full text of articles in ABI/INFORM, Health and Wellness Information and Periodical Abstracts provided they are licensed to do so. Libraries that implement this feature will optimize their investments in the OCLC FirstSearch service and increase overall user satisfaction with the FirstSearch databases they provide access to. This capability was previously made available for full text within the Contemporary Women's Issues, Electronic Collections Online and Wilson Select Plus databases, and will be expanded eventually to include other FirstSearch databases that contain full text.

Additional Content in Chemical Abstracts Student Edition
The Chemical Abstracts Student Edition database has been enhanced with citations from 22 additional journals published by the American Chemical Society and the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Wilson Select Database Discontinued
As announced earlier, the Wilson Select database has been discontinued on the OCLC FirstSearch service. Wilson Select Plus continues to be available via both per-search and subscription access.

Resource Sharing  


CHECK THE ILL POLICIES DIRECTORY

OCLC would like to remind you of certain things you should do at least twice per year:
  • change your clock settings when appropriate,
  • check the batteries in your smoke detector,
  • check your library's OCLC ILL Policies Directory entry to be sure address, phone numbers, and ILL policies are up to date!

There are two ways you can access the ILL Policies Directory to enter your library's information:

1. You can go straight to the Directory at <http://illpolicies.oclc.org>. Log on using your ILL Authorization Number and Password.

OR

2. You can log on to the OCLC ILL Web interface at <http://illweb.oclc.org> and click on the Policies Directory link at the top of the screen. This will launch the Directory in a new browser window. Close the ILL Web interface window in order to make changes to your Policies Directory record without incurring Access & User Support Fees.

NOTE: Access & User Support Fees will NOT accrue in ANY ILL Policies Directory session no matter which interface you choose to enter from.

Once you are in the Policies Directory, click "My Units" at the top of the screen to view and edit your own library's records.

Instructions for entering your information into the ILL Policies Directory can be found in the reference card, Getting Started with the OCLC ILL Policies Directory, which is available from the Directory web site at <http://www.oclc.org/support/documentation/ill/libpolicies/getstart/>.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ILL WEB!

September 18, 2003 was the ILL Web interface's second anniversary!

On September 18, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. EDT the new interface was released. If you took a look at ILL Web when it was 'born', take another look, it's grown up quite a bit! We've made a lot of changes in the last two years that have added features that our users have requested.

Here are a few:

  • Save authorization and password, favorite group symbols and printing & display options in a cookie using Local Browser Setting on the logon screen
  • Referral capability for GAC members and their agents
  • Ability to jump to specific states in holdings displays
  • Select a different holdings display from current display
  • Various navigation features to streamline actions
Changes to both ILL Web & Passport:

  • Added requested item's format to the Verified field
  • Added Lender LDR information to Pending records
  • May add own library's symbol to any Custom Holdings group to see your LDRs in Custom Union List displays
As a celebratory gesture, we ask our users to take a moment and give some attention to ILL Web's "cousin", the ILL Policies Directory. It just took over for the Name Address Directory in late August. Since it is still new to the Resource Sharing "family", please enter your library information, contacts and lending policies so that those who want to borrow from you may know your rules. You may access the ILL Policies Directory either from the ILL Web interface at <http://illweb.oclc.org> or by directly logging on to <https://illpolicies.oclc.org/>.

CONNEXION ENHANCEMENTS INSTALLED AND HELP DOCUMENTATION UPDATED

OCLC completes regular maintenance and enhancement installs for OCLC Connexion. Maintenance installs generally include minor enhancements that do not affect documentation or training, as well as some problem fixes. Details are noted below and are also included in System Update messages in Connexion News.

OCTOBER INSTALLATION
The OCLC Connexion Browser installation on October 5 was successful. The October install coincides with the WebDewey and Abridged WebDewey quarterly release.

This install message includes information about:

  • Search History -- search history added to several search screens throughout Connexion
  • Display of Institution Name Problem Fixed -- now easily view institution names--even if they contain a comma
  • WebDewey/Abridged WebDewey October Release - Work Area and search history now available
Search History
A Search History button was added to the Search WorldCat screen in August. With this installation, search history is added to several additional search screens throughout Connexion, including: Search Bibliographic Save File, Search Bibliographic Constant Data, Browse WorldCat, Search Authorities, Search Authorities Save File, Search Authorities Constant Data, Browse Authorities, Search WebDewey and Abridged WebDewey, Search WebDewey and Abridged WebDewey User Notes, Browse WebDewey and Abridged WebDewey, Search Pathfinders, Search Pathfinders Save File, Search Pathfinders Constant Data, Browse Pathfinders, Search Digital Archive, Search Digital Archive Save File, Search Digital Archive Constant Data and Search Pica GGC.

To view up to ten of your previous searches, click the Search History button or press (Alt + =). Click the Revise button if you want to edit the previous search and perform a new search. Click the Repeat button if you want to perform the same search again. To clear the search history and remove all existing searches, click Clear History.

The search type, timestamp, and search query are displayed on the Search History window. The timestamp indicates the time and date of the search. Your Search History is retained between sessions and persists on a per-authorization basis.

Please note that search histories generated from the Dewey Services main Search screen and the main Browse screen are independent of search histories generated from the Dewey Quick Search/Quick Browse feature. In other words, searches and browses entered from the main Dewey Search/Browse screens do not appear in the Dewey Quick Search/Quick Browse search history and vice versa.

Display of Institution Name Problem Fixed
Connexion allows you to move the mouse pointer over the institution symbol in either the 040 field or the locations listing to view the name of the institution. Previously, if the institution name contained a comma, any characters following the comma did not display. This is now corrected.

WebDewey/Abridged WebDewey October 2003 Quarterly Update
WebDewey and Abridged WebDewey are updated quarterly. Both services contain the latest version of the schedules, tables, Manual, and Relative Index entries from their respective enhanced DDC databases. The hierarchical displays in WebDewey and Abridged WebDewey feature updated main class and division captions (e.g., 700 Arts & recreation; 790 Sports, games & entertainment).

WebDewey is a web-based version of the enhanced DDC 22 database. This October 2003 release includes:
  • all updates to Dewey Decimal Classification, edition 22, through October 2003 (corrections, new developments, new built numbers, and additional electronic index terms)
  • thousands of Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) that have been statistically mapped to Dewey numbers from records in WorldCat (the OCLC Online Union Catalog) and intellectually mapped by DDC editors (including up to LCSH Weekly List through no. 48, 2002)
  • thousands of Relative Index terms and built numbers not available in print
  • links from mapped LCSH to the LCSH authority records
  • selected mappings from Medical Subject Headings (MeSH)

Abridged WebDewey is a web-based version of the enhanced Abridged 13 database. This October 2003 release includes:

  • all updates to Abridged Edition 13, through October 2003 (corrections, new developments, new built numbers, and additional electronic index terms)
  • selected editorially mapped LCSH/DDC from LCSH Weekly Lists through no. 48, 2002
  • LCSH that have been intellectually mapped to Dewey headings by DDC editors, including many from the OCLC publication, Subject Headings for Children
  • links from mapped LCSH to the LCSH authority records
  • mappings between abridged Dewey numbers and subject headings from the latest edition of H.W. Wilson's Sears List of Subject Headings
This October release of Abridged WebDewey is the last release based on Abridged 13. In December 2003, OCLC plans to release Abridged Edition 14 in Abridged WebDewey.

Dewey Services Interface Enhancements
The October release features the following interface improvements:
  • Work Area - input Dewey numbers into the work area as you build them
  • Search History - retrieve, revise, and repeat previous search/browse queries

Work Area
We are pleased to reintroduce the Work Area, which was available in the now obsolete product, Dewey for Windows. The work area is a free text input line in the Dewey Services interface that lets you input your base number and add to that number as you read number-building instructions.

The work area is located under the quick search/quick browse button and is available from schedule records and search and browse results screens. The work area is also available from user notes search results screens and user notes records. The work area will be present with any version of Internet Explorer supported by Connexion provided that cookies are enabled.

Turn Off Work Area
The default is set to show the work area. If you have no use for the work area, you may hide it by selecting the Hide option at: General-->Admin-->Preferences-->Dewey Services--> Options-->Dewey Record Options-->Work Area.

Show/Hide Work Area
If you have use for the work area occasionally, leave your preferences to Show, but turn it on and off when you need it. To turn on and off the Work Area, use <Alt>+<W>. To focus the work area (so that your cursor is placed in the work area), use <Alt>+<.> (period or full stop).

Search History
Search History is now available from WebDewey and Abridged WebDewey search pages, browse pages, user notes, and the quick search/quick browse feature.

To view up to ten of your previous searches, click the Search History button or press the <Alt>+<=> keys. Click the Revise button if you want to edit the previous search and perform a new search. View previous search results from the search page. View previous browse results from the browse page. View previous quick search and quick browse results from pages where the quick search/quick browse button is present (schedule records pages, search results pages, and browse results pages).

Keyboard Shortcuts
Remember, OCLC Connexion already contains a number of keyboard shortcuts. If "Dewey Services" is your *active tab, the following shortcuts activate the following buttons:

<Alt> + <1> Search (WebDewey or Abridged WebDewey)
<Alt> + <2> Browse (WebDewey or Abridged WebDewey)
<Alt> + <3> Create (blank User Note)
<Alt> + <4> Show (Active Records screen)
<Alt> + <W> Work Area toggle on/off (Provided work area is set to "Show" in Preferences)
<Alt> + <.> Focuses cursor on the Work Area (Provided work area is set to "Show" in Preferences)
<Alt> + <=> Show Search History (History will vary depending on your active screen)

Connexion Browser Help
Updated Help was included in the release of OCLC Connexion browser installed October 5, 2003.

In Connexion browser, click Help on the header bar of any screen to view context-specific information and instructions. To find other Help topics, use:

  • Links to Related Topics (listed at the end of each Help topic)
  • Search Help function (above the title of each Help topic)
  • Contents tab (top of each Help window)

Connexion Browser Online Documentation
Connexion browser guides have been updated to reflect recent system changes, clarify information, and correct errors. For a list of the guides updated in October 2003:

  1. Go to the Doc Finder page on the OCLC Web site: <https://www3.oclc.org/documentation/>
  2. Click "Recent updates" (navigation area, left side of page)
  3.  Look for titles that begin with "Connexion Browser - ". From a listed title, you can view the guide in either HTML or PDF format.

All Connexion browser guides (HTML and PDF) are available on the Connexion browser documentation page: <http://www.oclc.org/support/documentation/connexion/browser/default.htm>.

On the Connexion browser documentation page:

  • To view a guide in HTML format, click the title.
  • From the title page, use the links in the left-side navigation area:
    • PDF - View and/or print the guide in PDF format.
    • Abstract & revision notes - View a list that describes recent changes to the document. The Revision history is also on page 2 of the PDF).

NEW ONLINE ORDERING FOR DEWEY PRODUCTS AND SERVICES NOW AVAILABLE

Every seven years, OCLC publishes a new edition of the Dewey Decimal Classification. DDC 22 reflects user suggestions as well as worldwide changes in areas such as technology, medicine, geography and politics since publication of the 21st edition in 1996. It provides the most updated view of the Dewey classification and is available in both print and Web versions to fit your preferences.

Dewey works the way you do-online or by the book. In fact, there is a special WebDewey-DDC 22 combination package to make it even easier. Having both gives you the flexibility to classify in a way that's most comfortable for you. (Plus, WebDewey always has the latest entries!)

Online Ordering Now Available!
OCLC is pleased to announce the availability of online ordering of Dewey products and services through a new interactive web store. This new order option delivers a convenient, secure, easy-to-navigate ordering mechanism that can speed ordering, reduce order errors and simplify repeat order processing.

What is new about ordering via the web store?
The Dewey web store was built to incorporate many of the conveniences of popular online stores-including secure logon, real-time ordering, credit card processing, persistent customer profiles, confirmation that an order has been received (on-screen and e-mail) and links to additional information.

When a user creates an account, all contact information is saved in a fully secure library profile that can be accessed by the user to speed future ordering. (Credit card account information will not be stored.)

What stays the same with new ordering option?

  • Current order fulfillment workflows and policies
  • Pricing and product options
  • All currently available billing options still available to user: network billing, direct billing, purchase order-now credit card.
  • Paper order form option is still available (download from web site).
