Advisory Committee to the Nebraska Library Commission Talking Book and Braille Service

Nebraska Library Commission
1200 N Street, Suite 120
Meadowlark Room
Lincoln, Nebraska
Wednesday, July 6, 2016, 1:30 p.m.

Main agenda items for the July 6, 2016 meeting include the following but may be modified at such meeting:

  • Welcome, Introductions. Please take a minute or so to tell us about yourselves and what brought you to this committee.
  • Approval of minutes, 2015 meetings.
  • NLS national conference: Scott Scholz recently attended the NLS biennial conference of librarians serving individuals who are blind and physically handicapped. We will present some conference highlights and can discuss how upcoming NLS plans may impact TBBS service in Nebraska.
  • Update on “unrated” books: we discussed ideas on how to handle unrated commercial audiobook titles from NLS in the November meeting. Scott will detail the plans underway in cooperation from several talking book libraries to address this issue.
  • Outlook Nebraska’s Visually Impaired Community Resource Fair: Scott attended this event sponsored by Outlook Nebraska in Omaha on April 30. This was a very productive event. Many thanks to Outlook Nebraska for putting this on, and we’d love to see it become an annual event, or perhaps try to host a similar event in the Lincoln area.
  • BARD marketing: in looking at usage statistics for our book downloading site BARD, use by institutions is quite low compared to individuals. What could we do to encourage more BARD use by people like activity coordinators at nursing homes and care facilities?
  • Possible dates for fall meeting; Adjournment.
