Nebraska Books Honored by Center for the Book
The 2000 Nebraska Book Awards program, sponsored by the Nebraska Center for the Book (NCB), recognizes and honors books that are written by Nebraska authors, published by Nebraska publishers, and/or set in Nebraska or relate to Nebraska.
Five books published in 1999 were awarded certificates, representing the following categories: Non-Fiction, Fiction, Cover Design/Illustrations, and Poetry. Twenty-eight books were submitted for consideration Award. The following winners were announced at the Nebraska Center for the Book Annual Literature Festival on September 15.
Non-Fiction: Michael L. Tate, The Frontier Army and the Settlement of the West. Publisher: University of Oklahoma Press.
Non-Fiction (Honor Book): James Potter and L. Robert Puschendorf, Spans in Time: A History of wNebraska Bridges. Publisher: Nebraska State Historical Society. Co-produced by the Nebraska Department of Roads.
Poetry: Marjorie Saiser, Bones of a Very Fine Hand. Publisher: The Backwaters Press.
Cover Design/Illustrations: Larry D. Underwood, Abilene Lawmen: The Smith-Hickok Years, 1870-71. Publisher: Dageford Publishing.
Fiction: Jonis Agee, The Weight of Dreams. Publisher: Viking Penguin.
The winning books were displayed at the Literature Festival and presented to the Governor to be included in the permanent collection at the mansion. Winners are entitled to display award stickers on their book covers.
The Nebraska Center for the Book brings together the state's readers, writers, booksellers, librarians, publishers, printers, educators, and scholars to build the community of the book. As the people who know and love books and value the richness they bring to our lives, our Nebraska Center supports programs to celebrate and stimulate public interest in books, reading, and the written word.
