Reliable Online Information Available to Nebraskans through Local Libraries
When the Internet is cluttered with information, how do you select reliable sources? Try one of the electronic databases provided to Nebraska libraries. Since 1998 the Nebraska Library Commission has identified and funded statewide access to a number of databases and online services on behalf of Nebraska libraries and citizens. The program allows libraries across the state to provide current information resources to their customers in the library, at school, or at home.
The service is funded by the State of Nebraska through the Nebraska Library Commission and allows public libraries, K-12 schools, and academic libraries to provide access to thousands of full-text magazine articles, business information, reference works, biographies, indexes, and more to their patrons and students at no cost to the library.
The wealth of information available through these databases can best be seen by everyday examples like these:
- Students needing newspaper articles on current events can search a number of newspapers online for the full-text story.
- A new parent searching for information on infant health care can read the latest issue of Parenting Magazine.
- Farmers interested in ways cattle producers are handling this year's drought can find full-text articles from Beef magazine.
- Small business owners interested in labor market forecasts or wireless data services can read articles and retrieve statistics from Kiplinger Forecasts.
- A librarian can help a patron find the nearest library that has the book they need for their book group.
Nebraska achieves substantial discounts by purchasing these electronic databases on a statewide basis rather than each institution negotiating purchases individually. Libraries otherwise unable to afford these services have a new world of resources available to them and their customers.
To date, more than eight hundred Nebraska libraries are offering this service to their customers and students. Visit your local library and find out more about the statewide database resources or see the Nebraska Library Commission Web site and click on Electronic Databases.
