Reception Honors Governor's Mansion Library Project
First Lady Diane Nelson announced today that a reception honoring the Mansion Library Project will be held at the Governor's Residence on November 19, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. Directors of the libraries instrumental in the project have been invited to a private reception celebrating the collaborative effort of the Nebraska Center for the Book, Nebraska Library Commission, and the Heritage Room of Nebraska Authors at Lincoln City Libraries. This project will provide the Residence with a library that showcases books by Nebraska authors, books about Nebraska, and the book arts made in Nebraska.
The First Lady stated, "The Residence is visited by people from all over the world and it has been my dream to display the very best of Nebraska's culture…Nebraska authors, Nebraska artists, and Nebraska musicians. Certainly, the Mansion Library Project could not have been a success without the dedication of Nebraska's libraries, library foundations, and library friends groups."
In 1958, Nebraska libraries contributed books to the new Governor's mansion library. The Nebraska Public Library Commission sponsored a project that filled the shelves of the beautiful new library. Forty years later, the Governor's Mansion has undergone a much needed renovation, resulting in a place of beauty and pride for Nebraska's first family, visitors, and guests. As part of the 1998 Governor's Residence Restoration Project, First Lady Diane Nelson initiated a rejuvenation of the mansion library. To help complete this project, Nebraska libraries contributed books to update the mansion library.
Books to be added to the collection include Notable Nebraskans, by Jean Sanders (Nebraska Library Commissioner), donated by the Nebraska Library Commission; Fall Quarter, by Weldon Kees, donated by the Beatrice Public Library; Guide to Nebraska Authors, by Gerry Cox and Carol MacDaniels, donated by the Heritage Room of Nebraska Authors at Lincoln City Libraries; and a host of other fine examples of Nebraska literature.
The ongoing effort to display examples of the best of Nebraska culture to the public continues. Nominations of works by representative Nebraska authors are welcome.
