NCompass Live: Tech Talk with Michael Sauers: Mobile Beacon - Recorded Online Session 


In this month’s Tech Talk, Michael will be speaking with Laura Marlane, the Executive Director of the Providence (RI) Community Library, and Katherine Messier, the Managing Director of Mobile Beacon, about how libraries can provide mobile WiFi hotspots to their patrons.

Laura Marlane is the Executive Director of Providence Community Library, a non-profit organization that was formed in 2009 to save the nine former branches of the PPL. Laura has 28 years of experience working in academic, research and public libraries. She received her B.A. in English from Rhode Island College in 1994, and her MLIS from the University of Rhode Island in 1998. She has worked as the Technical Services Librarian and an Associate Director for the Rhode Island Historical Society Library; the Technology Coordinator/Systems Administrator for the West Warwick Public Library; the Director of the Central Falls Public Library; and the Assistant Director for PCL prior to being hired as the Executive Director there. Laura has also served as President of the Rhode Island Library Association and President of the Ocean State Libraries, Rhode Island’s public library consortium.

Katherine Messier, Managing Director, Mobile Beacon: Katherine is responsible for the strategic planning, partnership, business development and operations initiatives for Mobile Beacon. She also serves as the director of NACEPF, one of the largest national educational broadband service (EBS) licensees in the country. Katherine is an active advocate for using EBS spectrum to advance the availability and use of broadband for schools and libraries. She was a contributing author of the FCC’s 2010 Digital Textbook Playbook, a guide to help educators implement 21st century digital learning strategies, and a sponsor of SETDA’s 2012 whitepaper, The Broadband Imperative. Katherine received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Merrimack College and a Masters of Arts in Integrated Marketing Communications from Emerson College.
