CPLS Annual Meeting - Valentine

Description
The Central Plains Library System is holding the Annual Meeting in beautiful Valentine, Nebraska. We will have a catered lunch and provide updates about the System's activities. Then we are privileged to have a speaker from Humanities Nebraska deliver an intriguing program on "The Audacious, NE Saga Ė Descendants of DeWitty."

The town of DeWitty, later know as Audacious, located in Cherry County near Valentine, was the largest and longest lasting African American settlement in rural Nebraska. The settlers, including former slaves who had fled to Canada before the Civil War and their descendants, began to arrive in 1906-07, attracted by the 1904 Kinkaid Actís offer of 640 acres of free land in the Sandhills. Come learn about their struggles, triumphs and distinguishing characteristics!
