NEBASE Annual Meeting 2007 - West : Do you know where your patrons are? Exploring new spaces at your library! - Scottsbluff

Description
9:15 - 9:45 - Registration & time for games

9:45 - 10:45 - Gaming in the Library  - Moderator - Shannon White, Director of Network Services, Nebraska Library Commission. Panelists: Scott Kinney, Director, Chadron Public Library and Marjorie Harrison, Panhandle Library System Administrator

Gamers are stereotypically defined as teenage boys who don't get out much. However, studies show that gamers come from all backgrounds and in all ages. Gaming also doesn't have to be just video games. Young gamers do have ways of looking at things that older generations might not view the same way. (Just ask a ten-year-old about how they defeated their boss today.) This panel will present an overview of gamers and how gaming can be used in the library. It will also show you how libraries from around Nebraska are using gaming to attract and retain library users.
Want to try out some of the games that can bring new users into your library? We will have a gaming room set up throughout the meeting with:
  • Wii Sports - Tennis, Baseball, Golf, Bowling and Boxing
  • Dance Dance Revolution - PlayStation 2
  • Guitar Hero II - Xbox 360

10:45 - 11:00 - Break and time for games

11:00 - 12:00 - Instant Messaging: Trends and Practice - Susan Knisely, Online Services Librarian, Nebraska Library Commission

Instant messaging is becoming an increasingly common way to communicate. In some environments and among some populations, it is surpassing email in popularity. As a result, many believe that to stay relevant librarians need to be willing to adapt to the communications preferences of those they wish to serve. During this session we will not only look at instant messaging trends, we'll also give you some practical suggestions on how you can get started using this popular technology.
