Basic Skills-Collection Development Fall 2009 - Online

Basic Skills: Collection Development covers aspects of library work involved with library materials. In the class we will cover

  • intellectual freedom—why it is important, and how to handle incursions against it
  • how to get to know your community so that your collection reflects their interests and needs
  • writing policies, and how policies are important to help achieve goals, to protect the library, and to set priorities and criteria for the collection
  • the tasks related to library collections: selecting materials, acquiring them, physically maintaining them, and de-selecting them.

The Online class will begin on November 2, and participants should plan to be finished by December 18. The class is available to all staffers in Nebraska libraries with reliable Internet access. The class is presented as four learning modules, using Moodle learning management software. It involves reading materials in the class text (notebook) and online, doing exercises, participating in online discussion (posting to discussion board) and submitting written assignments for instructor comment. The class is asynchronous, that is, participants are not required to be connected to the class at particular times. However, there are interim due dates for class activities, and class members are asked to keep up with the class.

Enrollment in the Online class will be limited to 25 participants.

Participants who successfully complete the class will earn 6.25 C.E. credit hours and will fulfill the Basic Skills Collection Development requirement. C.E. credit for the course will not be earned by anyone who has not paid the course fee.

The registration fee is $35.00, which includes all class materials. Please send payment before the first class session to Linda Jensen at the Nebraska Library Commission. Please include a note with the check indicating the location of the class. If you prefer to pay by IBT, note that on your registration form.

Participants are not required to be enrolled in the Nebraska Public Librarian Certification Program, and participating in this class does not automatically enroll you in the Program. However, the Nebraska Library Commission and the Regional Library Systems strongly encourage enrollment and participation in the Certification Program.

The Basic Skills courses are sponsored by the Nebraska Library Commission and Nebraska’s Regional Library Systems.
