Description:

  • Columbia Granger's World of Poetry - For over a century, Granger's® has been the definitive source in English for locating a poem in anthologies on library shelves. First published in 1904, /The Columbia Granger's® Index to Poetry/ is now in its 13th edition. In 1999, Granger's went online as /The Columbia Granger's World of Poetry/. Granger's now provides access to 210,000 full text poems and 450,000 citations, as well as several new sets of critical context essays. Updates of additional poetry and auxiliary content will continue; plus we will launch an extensively rebuilt version of the current site later this summer. Look for the following enhancements:

    • Improved searching and browsing, enabling easy, intuitive searching of poets and poetry
    • Simpler access to the most studied longer works of poetry and all their parts
    • Poem Vs. Poem -- Compare two separate poems side-by-side
    • Direct searching of biographies, commentaries and critical context, including their content
    • Browsable and searchable lists of schools of poetry and eras, ethnicities/nationalities, and language
    • Audio readings of the 100 most beloved and studied poems
    • On the home screen, Poet's Book of Days calendar, Quote of the Day, and Poetry Trivia
  • Columbia Gazetteer of the World - The definition of the term gazetteer, when used in a geographical sense, is a "geographical index or dictionary." The comprehensive gazetteer, such as The Columbia Gazetteer of the World, is an encyclopedia of geographical places and features. In selecting the entries, the overriding goal was to provide maximum coverage of places and features, while achieving a balanced profile of each country. The criteria for including places are population threshholds, reflecting differing national environments; area size; political administrative frameworks; and economic, political, and cultural significance.

The Columbia Gazetteer of the World serves also as a unique guide to the ways in which names offer insight into the political, cultural, religious, and aesthetic meanings that people ascribe to particular environments, and in which the values of places change. The dynamism of the world system since World War II is graphically illustrated by changed names for both renewed and pre-existing places. To this welter of old, new, and changed place-names, the Columbia Gazetteer provides a definitive and reliable guide. In Summer 2007, we plan to launch an extensively redesigned site, which will offer:

    • Unique world encyclopedia with 170,000 entries
    • Search by geographic coordinates
    • Historical US Census Data to the present, other areas of the world to follow
    • Sort and organize your search results on screen
    • Download search results to Excel or GIS compatible GML
  • Columbia International Affairs Online - Columbia International Affairs Online /(CIAO) is the most comprehensive source for theory and research in international affairs. It publishes a wide range of scholarship from 1991 onward that includes working papers from university research institutes, occasional papers series from NGOs, foundation-funded research projects,  proceedings from conferences, books, journals and policy briefs. Each month, leading academic and research institutions, publishers, government agencies and journals contribute their conference proceedings and works on international affairs to our site. We now have approximately 350,000 pages to browse and search as well as provide timely special features, including a section of original case studies written by leading scholars, and a special focus each month, such as June's: "Suicide Terrorism."
