2002 State Aid to Public Libraries in Nebraska
Two factors necessitated a change in the formula for distribution of direct state aid to public libraries for 2002. First, census figures for 2000 are now used for determination of service populations. Second, a special session of the Nebraska Legislature resulted in reductions in state agency budgets. The Library Commission's Operations and Aid Program budgets were reduced by 4% in the current fiscal year (FY2002) and 5% in fiscal year 2003. The Nebraska Library Commissioners voted at their November 9, 2001 meeting to apply the 4% and 5% cuts equally among the programs funded under the Aid category. These Aid programs include Regional Library Systems, Aid to Accredited Public Libraries, Lender Compensation, Continuing Education & Training Grants, and Statewide Databases.
