Governor Johanns appointed Nebraska Library Commission Director Rod Wagner to be the Governor's representative on the Nebraska Development Network Board of Directors. Rod also served as representative during Ben Nelson's term.
Velma Sims from Fremont has been appointed to the Nebraska Library Commission by Governor Johanns. Dr. Sims replaces Katherine Fletcher who resigned last fall. Velma is a retired Fremont elementary school principal and has been active in a variety of Fremont area community improvement activities and the Fremont Public Library friends group.
The Nebraska Library Commission received the Public Service Award from the Nebraska Development Network at their annual meeting and banquet. The award was given to the Library Commission "for its statewide promotion, development and coordination of library services. The Library Commission strives to connect people with information. Through information technology, traditional publications and caring individual interaction, the Commission has helped libraries across the state. The Commission's dedication to the state's libraries and the network has ignited flames of economic and community development and helped to make Nebraskans more connected."
The Records Management Division of the Secretary of State's office received a Government Technology Collaboration Fund Grant to develop standards for the use of electronic imaging, e-mail and Internet Web sites by state and local government agencies in Nebraska. The Library Commission and the Records Management Division arranged a meeting for Nebraska library representatives to provide standards development input on April 20, from noon - 1 p.m. CST, using the State's Video Conferencing network. With passage of LB 362 by the Legislature and approval by Governor Johanns, public library laws will change to permit formation of public library federations. A basic purpose of this new legislation is to provide a mechanism for independent public libraries to cooperatively form a library federation for cooperative library service arrangements. Two or more local government entities could form a federation, and would not lose their individual autonomy. The new law provides a governing structure and methods for organizing and administering a federation. Federations may be organized within a county, or may go beyond a single county. The federation model is a companion to legislation enacted in 1997 which reorganized statutes for county public library systems.
Nebraska State Government Publications 1998, the annual cumulation of publications which have been listed in the Library Commission's What's Up Doc? newsletter, is now available. Publications are listed alphabetically by title and in broad subject categories. All items are available for loan from the Library Commission. Rod Wagner, Director of the Nebraska Library Commission, signed a contract giving all public and post-secondary libraries across the state unlimited access to Electric Library from March 1, 1999 through June 30, 2000. State funding approved by the 1998 Legislature supports this group purchase. The Library Commission also arranged for K-12 media specialists to participate in a trial with discounted subscription pricing. The deadline to order is April 26. The Library Commission's Youth Advisory Board teleconference meeting originally scheduled for April 23 was moved to May 14, from 1- 4 p.m. CST. The development of state guidelines for children's' access to the Internet will be discussed. Summer Reading Themes for the years 2002 and 2003 will be chosen at the Cooperative Summer Library meeting in Salt Lake City on April 22. If you would like a list of the themes being considered and/or to offer input to the group, request Summer Reading Themes, 2002/2003 from Mary Jackson(see previous). You must get responses to Mary Jackson or one of the state representatives, Karen Drevo, Norfolk Public Library or Delores Feekin, Crete Public Library, before April 20.
