Nebraska Launches Western Trails Project Web Site

Students, researchers, and others interested in the history and development of trails in the western states now have desktop access to a unique collection of digitized images called Western Trails.   Cultural heritage institutions (libraries, museums, and archives) will also be able to use for future digitization projects Western States best practice documents on Digital Imaging and Metadata that were created for the project.

Western Trails was created with a $498,637 National Leadership Grant awarded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services in October, 2001 and ending in December 2003.   The grant funded a collaborative project to digitize and provide world-wide-web access to photographs, text and maps about historic and modern trails in Colorado, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Kansas, and was matched by over $600,000 from the states.  The lead agency, University of Denver Penrose Library, disbursed $20,000 sub-grants to coordinating agencies and $5,000 incentive grants to project participants in each state.  Each state has

Nebraska's Project /westerntrails/

Nebraska is rich in trails of all types-- pioneer wagon trails, the first transcontinental railroad, the famed Lincoln Highway, and modern recreational trails.  The Nebraska collection contains images from six participants reflecting a broad interpretation of the trails theme:

187 images of photographs, maps, artifacts, and documents related to Chimney Rock.  Most are from the Chimney Rock Visitors' Center exhibit.

511 images taken from their collection of 600 photographs, 67 paintings, and 400 drawings by famed pioneer artist William Henry Jackson. Jackson observed and illustrated the journeys of  many travelers on the overland trails.

738 images from the library's extensive photograph, map, and slide collection on early Omaha.  Omaha is the site of the Union Pacific headquarters and point of eastern origin for the first transcontinental railway.

733 images of journals and photographs from wagon, rail, and automobile trips made by the Paine family from 1889 to 1920, Norman Reese's remembrances of traveling to Hall County in 1860 at the age of 14, and Lincoln Highway photographs.

640 images from five texts on the westward movement through Nebraska along the Oregon Trail and the Union Pacific rail lines. They include Croffut's Transcontinental Tourist Guide (1871), Geography of the Oregon Trail in Nebraska by Mildred Krouch (1933), Guide to the Union Pacific Railroad Lands (1870), Incidents of a Trip Through the Great Platte Valley to the Rocky Mountains and Laramie Plains by Silas Seymour (1867), and The  Union Pacific Railroad: A Trip across the North American Continent From Omaha to Ogden (1871).

450 images of three text documents on recreational trails. Cowboy Trail Master Plan (1997), the plan for a modern hiker-biker trail extending from Norfolk to Chadron, Network of Discovery (1994), a comprehensive trails plan for the state,  and Nebraska Nature Trails by Ruth Fleming (1933), a WPA-funded guide to creating nature trails.

The Nebraska Database

Each participant created master images, internet access images, thumbnail images, and metadata (catalog) records. Master images are stored on high-quality CD-ROMS and online.  Access images and thumbnails can be viewed by users using the Nebraska database, hosted on a server at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.  Users can search for images by keyword, title, and subject.   A database search interface linked from the main Western Trails web site will provide a single point of entry to images contributed by all four states.

Benefits of the Project

Despite the large amount of time and effort involved, participants agree that they gained valuable expertise for future projects and provided useful content for users.  One benefit of the grant has been extended to Nebraska libraries and museums who were not actual project participants is low-cost digitization training.   Introduction to Digitization, Introduction to Scanning, and Introduction to Metadata workshops were offered early in 2002.  The Digitization and Scanning workshops were offered in August 2003.

The Best Practice documents created for the project will be valuable guides for Nebraska cultural heritage institutions planning digitization projects in the future.
