The American FactFinder: Gateway to Census Information

In March of 1999 the Census Bureau introduced a new public access database, the American FactFinder, available from the Bureau web site at http://www.census.gov It will be the primary site for users to access data from Census 2000, the American Community Survey, and the 1997 Economic Census.  The site was demonstrated at the Census Data Center annual conference in Omaha August 26, 1999.

Users can click on Facts about My Community to find a profile of selected social, economic or housing characteristics for states, cities, counties and congressional districts.  It currently makes available data from the 1990 census, including the popular Community Profiles,  formerly available only on the census STF1A  and STF3A CD-ROMs.

·         Population and Housing Facts  offers detailed data from the 1990 census.  In future years it will also include data from American Community Survey, an exciting new annual survey that will provide information about households, education, income, and housing for communities between Decennial census years. Users  have the option of viewing quick predefined tables, browsing detailed tables from the Summary Data Files (new name for Summary Tape Files), or using Advanced Query to create customized tables from the full Public Use Microdata files.

·         Maps  allows users to combine maps of a geographic area with statistical data.

·         Industry and Business Facts will provide data from the 1997 Economic Census as it is released.

·         Search FactFinder  is similar to the keyword searching feature on the CD-ROMs, locating  keywords within census data tables.

·         Help Me is a step-by-step tutorial on using the American Fact Finder.

YourSELF:  Middle School Nutrition Education Kit for Teachers

Librarians in schools  offering nutrition counseling, youth program coordinators and counsellors  might be interested in  this  1998 kit from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service.   YourSELF: Middle School Nutrition Education Kit for Teachers was developed as part of the Team Nutrition initiative to help students in grades six through nine understand how their decisions about eating patterns and physical activity today can affect the way they grow and their health for years to come.  It is designed for use by classroom teachers and cafeteria managers.  The kit includes a teacher’s guide, videocassette, two posters,  30 yourSELF  Student Activity Guides, and 30 yourSELF Magazines. The Teacher’s Guide covers instructions for using the kit, discussion guides for the video segments,  learning objectives and optional enrichment activities.  The videocassette has three segments. “The Making of  a TV spot” shows a cast creating a television spot designed to motivate kids to keep moving and make appropriate eating choices.  The 60-second spot “The Power of Choice” comes next, followed by a final discussion segment called “Choosing Yourself”.   The Student Activity Guide and Magazine  promote self-assessment and self-responsibility by the students.

A copy of the YourSELF kit is available for loan from the Nebraska Library Commission by calling the Reference Desk at 1-800-307-2665.  The call number is A98.2:N95/9/KIT.  Parts of the kit and many other nutrition resources are are available at the Food and Nutrition Service web site at http://151.121.3.25/teanut/Resources/index.html. Additional copies of the kit are available for purchase for $25 from the National Food Service Management Institute by calling 1-800-321-3054.
