Electronic Databases for State of Nebraska Employees

In addition to providing services to Nebraska libraries the Library Commission provides  reference and information services for the work-related needs of  Nebraska state executive, legislative, and judicial branch employees.  With funding provided by the Governor and Legislature, the Library Commission has purchased access to a variety of databases which state employees can access from their desktops.  They have been scripted to recognize  IP addresses of state agency computers so that a user id and password is not required.  They can be accessed from a World Wide Web page at   nlc.nebraska.gov/netserv/firstsearch.html.

If you are a state employee and scripted access does not work from your computer,  please  contact Allana Novotny at the Library Commission 402-471-6681, (toll-free in Nebraska 1-800-307-2665) for assistance.  For help in using any of the databases, or if you would like to have us do a search for you, contact the Library Commission reference desk at 402-471-4016, (toll-free in Nebraska 1-800-307-2665) .

ABI Inform:  Designed to facilitate the process of identifying magazine and journal articles on business and management topics, ABI/INFORM Global also provides substantial coverage of issues related to public policy, community and rural development, urban planning, human resources, marketing, finance, taxation, economics, and technology. ABI/INFORM Global indexes and abstracts articles from over 1,500 publications, with coverage for some titles extending back to 1970. It also provides full text articles from over 600 of the most popular and important of these publications.

Books in Print with Reviews:  Allows users to retrieve data on over 1.9 million in-print, forthcoming, out-of-print, and out-of-stock publications like its print counterpart. The database also includes over 288,000 online full text book reviews! Typical records include title, author, ISBN, price, and publication information. Users may search using a variety of access points, including author, title, subject, grade level, and price. The database also includes a Publisher Information component, enabling users to access information on individual publishers (e.g., addresses, phone numbers, return policies, discounts, and products).

Electric Library:  Provides full-text access to a wide variety of source material, including: magazine, journal, and newspaper articles; wire service stories; television and radio transcripts; photographs; maps; and reference books (almanacs, dictionaries, subject encyclopedias, etc.). The database supports both natural language and Boolean searching and is designed to provide novice users with easy access to online information.

Facts on File:  Brings together content from seven core reference databases to answer questions about events, issues, statistics and people of the last 20 years and delivers in-depth features on "Historic Events" drawn from the 60-year Facts On File archive.

Firstsearch

·        ArticleFirst contains bibliographic citations that describe items listed on the table of contents pages of more than 13,000 journals in science, technology, medicine, social science, business, the humanities, and popular culture. Each ArticleFirst record includes a link to library holdings information.

·        ContentsFirst contains the table of contents pages and holdings information from more than 13,000 journals in science, technology, medicine, social science, business, the humanities, and popular culture. Although most of the journals are published in English, journals in other languages are also included. Each ContentsFirst record includes a link to library holdings information.

·        Electronic Collections Online contains a growing collection of scholarly journals in a variety of subject areas, all with full-text articles online. Articles include all original content and images. The interface supports cross-journal searching and browsing within selected journals. Users can view bibliographic information for all journals but can only view abstracts and full-text articles from journals to which their institutions subscribe.

·        ERIC  indexes and abstracts both published and unpublished sources on thousands of educational topics. All levels and types of education are covered, including early childhood, elementary, secondary, higher, adult, vocational, and special. It is the online equivalent of RIE (Resources in Education) and CIJE (Current Index to Journals in Education).

·        GPO Monthly Catalog consists of records published by the Government Printing Office (GPO) since July 1976. It includes references to congressional committee reports and hearings, debates, documents from executive departments, and more. All subjects of interest to the U.S. government are covered.

·        MEDLINE covers all areas of medicine, including clinical medicine, experimental medicine, dentistry, nursing, health services administration, nutrition, and much more. It indexes over 3,500 journals (most with abstracts), with coverage from 1965 to the present. Each MEDLINE record includes a link to library holdings information.

·        NetFirst contains bibliographic citations--complete with summary descriptions and subject headings—describing high-quality Internet accessible resources suitable for a wide range of interests and age groups. Records contain hot links to connect users to resources of interest.

·        PapersFirst provides access to individual papers presented at conferences worldwide. It is a major research aid covering every congress, symposium, exposition, workshop, and meeting added to The British Library Document Supply Centre's vast proceedings collection since October 1993.

·        ProceedingsFirst indexes worldwide meetings, conferences, expositions, workshops, congresses, and symposia. Each ProceedingsFirst record describes one event. A list of papers presented at the event is included.

·        The Union List of Periodicals contains records for individual issues of magazines and journals. Each record is linked to library holdings information, allowing librarians and patrons alike to find out which libraries own individual issues. Unlike ContentsFirst, this database does not include article-level information.

·        The World Almanac is a fundamental reference source for everyone—students, library patrons, library reference staff, and scholars alike. This database includes information from four almanacs: The World Almanac and Book of Facts 1997; The World Almanac of the U. S. A.; The World Almanac of U. S. Politics; and The World Almanac for Kids. Subject coverage includes arts and entertainment, U.S. cities and states, people in the news, the nations of the world, sports, the environment, vital statistics, science and technology, computers, taxes, and much more.

·        WorldCat contains over 40 million records describing material cataloged by OCLC member libraries around the world. It includes bibliographic information on books, manuscripts, videos, sound recordings, periodicals, maps, newspapers, musical scores, and computer programs. Over 370 languages and 4,000 years of knowledge are represented. Each WorldCat record includes a link to library holdings information.

Wilson Web

·        Wilson OmniFile Full Text Select is a multidisciplinary, 100% full text database. It provides indexing, abstracts, and full text articles from close to 1,000 magazines and journals dating back to January 1994. Subject coverage includes current events, business, education, science, the humanities, and the social sciences (including librarianship). Types of material indexed include feature articles, reviews, obituaries, recipes, do-it-yourself works, interviews, speeches, poems, and short stories.

·         Wilson Biographies Plus contains full text articles from more than 100 print volumes of biographical reference books published by H.W. Wilson. Many of the biographies are enhanced with full text, abstracts, and citations from H.W. Wilson databases. In total, Wilson Biographies Plus contains more than 46,000 biographies. All biographies are searchable by name, profession, gender, date of birth, date of death (if applicable), and keyword. All biographies and many obituaries are also searchable by place of origin and race/ethnicity.

Electronic Library: A Library Commission web site intended to "make available, Internet resources that help Nebraskans meet their professional, educational, cultural, and recreational information needs".  In short - it is your mobile bookmark of favorite locations. The Electronic Library is arranged by basic subject headings listed alphabetically. Some web sites are included in several subject areas where there may be overlap in coverage. If you prefer keyword search strategies over browsing, a search engine is included on the front page and each individual subject listing page to help you locate relevant results.

State Government Publications Online is a directory to over 600 full text online publications of Nebraska state agencies, boards, commissions, and state-funded colleges and universities. Publications are listed alphabetically under the name of the agency or agency division. A search feature allows keyword searching on words in the publication titles. Types of material include annual reports, statistical reports, newsletters, and downloadable forms. Most items are posted on agency servers but some have been scanned and posted by the Nebraska Library Commission. Some publications are in .pdf format, requiring users to have the Acrobat Reader plug-in installed in their web browsers. A link for downloading the plug-in and helpful hints for using it are provided.
