Nebraska's Electronic Library </nsf/nel.html>
Whether you're new to the Internet or been clicking on hotlinks
for years now, it's always nice to be familiar with a few well-organized
websites that feel like a comfortable pair of walking shoes.
The Electronic Library is intended to "make available, Internet
resources that help Nebraskans meet their professional, educational,
cultural, and recreational information needs" In short -
it is your mobile bookmark of favorite locations. The Electronic
Library is arranged by basic subject headings listed alphabetically.
Some web sites are included in several subject areas where there
may be overlap in coverage. If you prefer keyword search strategies
over browsing, a search engine is included on the front page and
each individual subject listing page to help you locate relevant
results.
An excellent example that highlights the arrangement of the Electronic
Library is a search on the term "road conditions."
Sites on this topic are included in three subject areas: Nebraska
Resources, Travel, and Weather. Another helpful feature is access
to reference librarians at the Nebraska Library Commission. On
each subject page, you may ask questions, comment upon, or suggest
sites for inclusion in the Electronic Library. Three reference
librarians receive these messages and we strive to answer all
queries within 24-hours.
Among the abundant subject listings in the Electronic Library
is a section on Government broken down into city, county, federal
and international sub-headings. This makes locating information
at the appropriate level a snap. One mega site of federal government
agencies is the Federal Web Locator <http://www.law.vill.edu/Fed-Agency/fedwebloc.html#search>
and an especially helpful site for state government information
is located at: <http://www.piperinfo.com/state/states.html>.
If you are looking for information from a specific state on the
Internet, this is a great place to begin.
The Electronic Library can help you answer oodles of questions
like: What kind of tips do you have on traveling with a pet <http://www.healthypet.com/;
Who won the Pulitzer Prize the year I was born; <http://www.pulitzer.org/archive/>
and What is the price of a plane ticket from Lincoln to Chicago
<http://macwww.db.erau.edu/www_virtual_lib/aviation/airlines.html>?
Please visit the Electronic Library and discover how it can help
answer your day-to-day questions.
North American Industry Classification System (NAICS), United
States, 1997 (document # E-173*) replaces the 1987 SIC system.
With this official U.S. Government Manual, government and business
analysts will be able to compare directly industrial production
statistics collected and published in the three North American
Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) countries. Includes 350 new industries,
definitions for each industry, tables showing correspondence between
1987 NAICS and 1987 SICs codes and vice versa, alphabetic list
of more than 18,000 businesses and their corresponding NAICS code,
and a special section on what small businesses need to know about
NAICS.
Looking at Ourselves and Others (documents # E-172*) from
the Peace Corps, this teaching guide contains activities designed
to challenge students to become more conscious of the values they
share with their families, friends, and communities. Provides
students with analytical tools to help them combat stereotypical
thinking and enhance cross-cultural communication.
Safeguarding Your Technology, Practical Guidelines For Electronic
Education Information Security (document # E-160*) is a guide
that has been developed specifically for educational administrators
at the building, campus, district, system, and state levels.
It is meant to serve as a framework to help them better understand
why, and how, to effectively secure their organization's information,
software, and computer and networking equipment. Because this
intended audience has in most cases been trained to manage education
organization and not computer systems, the document is written
in non-technical language and emphasizes a step-by-step approach
to protecting education information in a technology-based system,
regardless of computer or network type and technical savvy. Since
only the reader understands his or her organization, its needs,
capabilities, limitations, and unique circumstances, the guidelines
are presented as well-researched recommendations (not canned solutions)
for developing security policies that are customized to meet each
organization's specific needs.
