Library Commission Delivers Computers to Rural Libraries
Throughout May, multimedia PCs for public access to the Internet World Wide Web and a variety of CD-ROM titles and other software will arrive at rural libraries across Nebraska. The computers and software are the result of a partnership between Microsoft Corporation and the Nebraska Library Commission to provide public access to the Internet and other computer resources in 15 rural Nebraska libraries. These libraries will be equipped to help their communities take advantage of information and learning resources from all over the world. They will make exciting educational resources available to Nebraska children and a variety of other resources, including word processing, spread sheet, presentation and graphic design, and other software, available to local businesses, organizations and individuals.
Allana Novotny, Library Commission Network Services Librarian, will deliver the computers with the software loaded and she will train library staff and volunteers, along with other members of the community. "We are very pleased that Microsoft has selected the Library Commission to direct this partnership," said Rod Wagner, Library Commission Director. "The Library Commission will continue to support and coordinate the statewide Libraries Online! project in partnership with the Nebraska Commission on
Indian Affairs, Nebraska's Regional Library Systems and the Nebraska Department of Economic Development (DED)." DED's participation includes the Governor's Global Community Initiative Project, the Nebraska Development Network, and the
Nebraska Rural Development Commission. As the state library agency, the Nebraska Library Commission mission is statewide promotion, development and coordination of library and information services.
