Getting Started

The Getting Started guide provides a physical description of the DA2 player, instructions for powering on and off, charging the battery, connecting to Wi-Fi, downloading from BARD, and accessing the User Guide.

DA2 User Guides

Onboard User Guide

The DA2 features an onboard audio user guide. To access the onboard User Guide, press and hold the Bookshelf button for at least two seconds. You can navigate through the User Guide by using the four arrow keys in the center of the player. The Up and Down arrow keys control the navigation level, and the Right and Left arrow keys control the reading position. To close the User Guide, press the Power button once.

Connecting the DA2 to Wi-Fi

By default, the DA2’s Wi-Fi is set to off. To enable Wi-Fi, do the following:

  1. Open Settings by holding the Info button. The Info button is an orange square with the letter "I" brailled on it. It is the only button on the DA2 that does not have a print label. The player will announce, “Entering Menu” and then announce the “Book Reader” prompt. After you hear the “Book Reader” prompt, press the Right arrow until the “Settings” prompt is heard. Then press the Info button.
  2. The player will announce the “User Settings” prompt. Press the Right arrow until the
    “Wi-Fi” prompt is heard, and then press the Info button.
  3. If the player announces, “Wi-Fi off,” press the Info button until you hear “Wi-Fi on.”
  4. Use the Up arrow to exit the menu. The player will announce, “Wi-Fi.” To prepare to connect to a Wi-Fi network, press the Info button.

After Wi-Fi has been enabled, connect to a Wi-Fi network by doing the following:

  1. In the Wi-Fi menu, use the Right arrow until you hear the “New Connection” prompt and press the Info button.
  2. The player will announce the “Scan for SSID” prompt. Press the Info button. The player will announce, “Loading.” Then, it will announce the first Wi-Fi name in the list of nearby Wi-Fi networks.
  3. Use the Left and Right arrows to move among the list of available networks. Press the Info button to select your desired network.
  4. You will be prompted to enter your Wi-Fi password. Use the Up and Down arrows to navigate through characters; press and hold them for quick navigation. Press the Bookmark button to switch between character types. Press the Sleep button to insert the current character at the current position. Press the Play button to review the entered text. Erase the previous character with the Rewind button. Erase the next character with the Fast Forward button. You can use the Left and Right arrows to move the cursor through characters that you have already entered. If you need to start over, press the Mode button to cancel text input.
  5. When you have finished entering your Wi-Fi password, press the Info button to submit the entered text. The player will announce “Confirmed,” followed by “Loading.”
  6. If successful, the DA2 will announce “Connection successful” followed by “Wi-Fi connected.” The player will then ask if you would like to set a nickname for the Wi-Fi network. If you would like to use the default name, simply press the Info button to confirm.

It is also possible to connect to Wi-Fi by typing the information, after connecting a USB-A keyboard

The DA2 will automatically enter Text Input Mode when it is time to type text. This includes setting up Wi-Fi, logging in to your BARD account, and performing searches. When in Text Input mode, you can type text with the buttons on the DA2 or by connecting a supported USB-A keyboard.

  1. Connect your USB-A keyboard to the USB-A port on the right side of the DA2.
  2. If the USB keyboard is supported, the DA2 will announce “USB keyboard connected.”
  3. Use the USB keyboard to type text. Confirm your entry by pressing the Info button on the DA2.
  4. When the USB keyboard is no longer needed, disconnect it from the USB-A port of the DA2.

Log-In to BARD

After your DA2 is connected to Wi-Fi, you may configure your BARD account using the following instructions:

  1. Press the Mode button to switch from the Book Reader mode to the NLS BARD mode.
    Alternatively, you can open Settings by holding the Info button. The player will announce, “Entering Menu” and then announce the “Book Reader” prompt. After you hear the “Book Reader” prompt, press the Right arrow until the “NLS BARD” prompt is heard. Then press the Info button.
  2. If this is your first time logging into BARD on this player, you may hear the announcement, “Press Play to listen to the User License Agreement or Press the Right arrow to navigate directly to Acknowledge. Then, press Info to confirm.” Follow these instructions to proceed.
  3. The player will then announce the “Login” prompt. Press Info to select it.
  4. The DA2 will now enter Text Input Mode, which will allow you to enter your email address and then your password.
    In Text Input Mode, you may either directly enter your BARD login credentials via the DA2 buttons, or use a USB-A keyboard.
  5. If you have entered your login information correctly, the DA2 will say “Login successful.”

Downloading Books

Follow these instructions to download a book from BARD. Your Reader Advisor can also add titles to your Wish List for easy downloading.

Note: you must have your DA2 connected to Wi-Fi and be logged into an active BARD account. After powering the DA2 on, it may take a moment for the Wi-Fi to connect. When the player connects to Wi-Fi, it will play a chime and announce, "Connected to: [Wi-Fi name]."

  1. Press the Mode button to switch from the Book Reader mode to the NLS BARD mode.
    Alternatively, you can open Settings by holding the Info button. The player will announce, “Entering Menu” and then announce the “Book Reader” prompt. After you hear the “Book Reader” prompt, press the Right arrow until the “NLS BARD” prompt is heard. Then press the Info button.
  2. Press the Info button when the voice announces “Search collection.” The player will enter Text Input Mode. You can directly enter your search term(s) into the DA2, or connect a USB-A keyboard.
  3. After you have entered your search term(s), press the Info Button to confirm; the DA2 will announce “Confirmed.”
  4. The DA2 will announce “Loading” and then the number of results. It will announce the first title in the list.
  5. Use the Right arrow to navigate to the title you wish to download. Press the Left arrow to navigate backwards in the list.
  6. Press the Info Button when the DA2 announces the title of the item you wish to download.
  7. The DA2 will ask, “Select to download?” Press the Info Button to confirm. The player will announce, “[Title] queued for download.” Downloading will occur silently in the background.
    To check the status of your downloading material(s), press the Up arrow to return to the NLS BARD menu. Press the Right arrow button to navigate to the “Current Download” prompt. Press the Info button. The DA2 will announce the first title of the currently downloading book(s). Press the Info button to select it, or press the Right arrow button to navigate to a different title. After pressing the Info button on the desired title, the player will announce the “Show Status” prompt. Press the Info button to confirm. The player will announce, “Downloading” followed by the percentage of the download.
  8. When the download is complete, the DA2 will announce, “NLS BARD [Title] download completed.”
  9. Press the Bookshelf Button to confirm that your book has downloaded.

Playing Downloaded Books

Follow these instructions to play/navigate through a book stored on the DA2. You must have either downloaded a book from BARD or have transferred a book from a cartridge to internal memory.

  1. Press the Bookshelf Button.
    The player will announce the number of books, followed by the first title on the list. Navigate through the titles by using the Right and Left arrow buttons.

  2. When the player announces the title you wish to read, press the Play/Stop Button.

  3. The book will begin playing.
    While the book is playing, you can use the Up and Down arrows to change the navigation level. Use the Left and Right arrows to control the reading position. Use the Fast Forward and Rewind buttons to jump forward or backward in the text by increments of 5 seconds. While the book is playing, you may also adjust the Tone, Speed, and Volume with the corresponding buttons.
