CONTENTdm - October's Featured Collections

Each month, three collections from the CONTENTdm Collection of Collections are featured on the CONTENTdm Web site. The featured collections for October are the CSUDH Digital Collections, Singin' Sam, the Barbasol Man, and the Great Basin History of Medicine Photo Archives.

CSUDH Digital Collections contain images relating to the history of the university, the 1910 Los Angeles International Air Meet at Dominguez Field, the historic Rancho San Pedro, South Bay Los Angles history, and the Del Amo, Watson, Carson, and Dominguez families.

Singin' Sam, the Barbasol Man
Morrisson-Reeves Library
This online collection contains not only images from the career of Harry Frankel (1888-1948), better known as Singin' Sam the Barbasol Man, but includes audio and video files of some of his performances.

Great Basin History of Medicine Photo Archives
Claremont Colleges
The images in this collection represent a portion of over 7,000 photographs that relate to the University of Nevada School of Medicine; the Nevada State Medical Association and member societies; the Reno Surgical Society; 19th-century frontier military medicine in the Great Basin; and Nevada hospitals, doctors, nurses, dentists, and veterinarians.

These are just a few of the many outstanding digital collections created by CONTENTdm users.

If you would like to add your collections to the Collection of Collections, log in to the CONTENTdm User Support Center and follow the instructions. Be sure to submit metadata for all required fields including the Entered by field.

WilsonWeb Beta Testers Needed

OCLC WorldCat Resource Sharing Enhancements

For the October install the following changes have been made to WorldCat Resource Sharing:

  • There is a new reason for no, within the drop down menu. “Not licensed to fill” should be used when the lending library does own the item but due to contractual obligations are unable to fill (e.g. electronic resources).
  • When a lender replies to a request with “Not found as cited” as the reason for no, the request will be returned as Unfilled for the borrower to remedy the citation. It no longer will be routed to any additional lenders.
  • Users are able to print labels when individual requests are processed as well as through batch functionality (Aug. 2007).
  • The ability to view 20, 50, 75, or 99 request in a given category is persistent when users go from category to category
  • Users are able to search the archive with the closed date as the search guide.
  • Some users experienced not being able to update their records when the Shipped Via field an electronic delivery method was present as well as in the Electronic Delivery fields in the request form. This was due to an error in coding, and has been corrected.

NEBASE Hour for November: WebJunction: Resource for Rural Libraries

The NEBASE Hour for November 2007 is "WebJunction: Resource for Rural Libraries".

The NEBASE Hour is a FREE, monthly, online information session on OCLC products and services.

The NEBASE Hour is a live presentation that you will access from your own computer via the Web. Audio is available via Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). You may ask any questions you have during the session. The session will be recorded for anyone who may want to see it again or who cannot attend it at the scheduled time. IMPORTANT: Please note that we are using new web conferencing software - Centra. Please read the information below this announcement for details about technical requirements and procedures for accessing live online sessions through Centra.

NEBASE Hour for November 2007: WebJunction: Resource for Rural Libraries

WebJunction is an online community where library staff meet to share ideas, solve problems, take online courses - and have fun! If you have not looked at the offerings at Web Junction lately, it's time to take a look. WebJunction provides resources and training specifically for rural and small libraries covering advocacy, funding, outreach and technology. Attend this session to learn what your colleagues across the country are doing to bring library services to their rural and small communities.

The session will be conducted by Christa Burns, OCLC Member Services Coordinator for NEBASE. Participants will receive 1 hour of CE credit. There is no cost to participate in this session.

INTRODUCING CENTRA LIVE! This Online Session will be conducted using Centra Live web conferencing software. For this reason it is crucial that you review the Centra Live technical requirements and perform the recommended Centra system check even if you've successfully attended previous Nebraska Library Commission Online Sessions. (Previous sessions used Genesys and Live Meeting software.) Please do this several days in advance of your scheduled session so you have plenty of time to update your system if necessary. Technical requirements (including a link to the system check) and general access instructions are available on the Nebraska Library Commission Online Sessions webpage.

AUDIO NOTE: Audio for Centra Live online sessions will be handled via Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology, as opposed to a telephone conference call. This means access to a telephone is not required. However, in order to hear the presentation attendees must be using a computer with a sound card and speakers. To ask questions and participate in class discussion, attendees will also need a microphone. If you don't have a microphone for your computer, you may request one from the Nebraska Library Commission, at no cost to you, by emailing Jeannette Powell at least a week in advance of your session. If only one individual is attending the session from a particular computer, a headset may be used in place of the speakers and microphone.

65 New Playaway Titles added in October

Nebraska libraries receive a 20% discount off all Playaway orders placed through the Nebraska Library Commission. Discounted prices for each available title are listed on the order form.

Ordering: The Nebraska Library Commission will collect order forms from Nebraska libraries and forward them to Playaway. Your order will be shipped directly to your library, but billing will be through the Nebraska Library Commission. For more information, including ordering instructions, links to order forms, and an extensive FAQ, see:

October 2, 2007, Washington DC-The Association of Research Libraries (ARL), the University of Virginia Library, the University of Washington Libraries, and the Conference Planning Committee are pleased to issue this call for proposals for the second Library Assessment Conference: Building Effective, Sustainable, Practical Assessment, to be held in Seattle, Washington, August 4-6, 2008. The conference goal is to support and nurture the library assessment community through a mix of invited speakers, contributed papers and posters, workshops, and engaging discussion.

Audience

The conference is designed for library and information professionals and researchers with responsibility for or an interest in the broad field of library assessment with an emphasis on (but not limited to) North American academic libraries.

Conference Topics

Conference presentations are sought in all areas of library assessment, including the following:

  • Learning & teaching

The Conference Planning Committee is especially interested in contributions that show how assessment results have been used to improve library services and add value to the user community.

Presentation Formats

Proposals are invited for presentations in a variety of formats, including papers, posters, and panel discussions. Presentation time for papers should be no more than 25 minutes. Panels will be given 50 minutes or less, including time for questions from the audience. Poster sessions are particularly welcome from attendees and specific time will be set aside for attendees to discuss posters with the presenters. The language of the conference is English (bilingual French/English or Spanish/English posters will also be accepted). Accepted proposals will be published in the conference proceedings, and all PowerPoint presentations will be posted on the conference Web site.

Proposal Submission Guidelines and Evaluation Procedures

1. All proposals will be submitted via the conference Web site.
2. Proposals will include a title, author(s), format, and abstract (maximum 500 words) describing the proposal.
3. Authors will provide a separate biographical statement (50 words).
4. The Conference Planning Committee will evaluate all proposals based on:
* their relevance to effective, sustainable, and practical library assessment;
* the significance of their contribution to the body of work associated with library assessment; and
* clarity of expression.
5. Proposals must be submitted by February 1, 2008.
6. Those submitting proposals will be notified of their status by March 15, 2008.
7. Presenters will be guaranteed a registration place and will be expected to pay registration fees.

OCLC announces a new global identity

OCLC, the world's largest library service and research organization, is uniting all offices under one name and visual brand identity to reflect a global enterprise with a unified strategy to serve libraries worldwide.

As a result, OCLC PICA, with offices in the Netherlands, Australia, France, Germany, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States, will be known as OCLC. By bringing together all offices under one name and identity, libraries worldwide can benefit from OCLC membership, research and an expanded portfolio around a comprehensive set of products and services.

The OCLC organization is now uniquely positioned to provide libraries with services at the point of need. Sharing, Privacy and Trust in Our Networked World

Sharing, Privacy and Trust in Our Networked World explores social spaces online and the library’s role.

OCLC has released the third in a series of reports that scan the information landscape to provide data, analyses and opinions about users' behaviors and expectations in today's networked world.

The practice of using a social network to establish and enhance relationships based on some common ground - shared interests, related skills, or a common geographic location - is as old as human societies, but social networking has flourished due to the ease of connecting on the Web. This OCLC membership report explores this web of social participation and cooperation on the Internet and how it may impact the library’s role, including:

  • The use of social networking, social media, commercial and library services on the Web
  • How and what users and librarians share on the Web and their attitudes toward related privacy issues
  • Opinions on privacy online
  • Libraries’ current and future roles in social networking

OCLC commissioned Harris Interactive to administer the online surveys for the report. Over 6,100 respondents, ages 14 to 84, from Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, were surveyed. The surveys were conducted in English, German, French and Japanese. OCLC and Harris also surveyed 382 U.S. library directors.

Sharing, Privacy and Trust in Our Networked World is available for download free of charge. Print copies of the 280-page report will also be available for purchase from the same site beginning October 29.

Serials Solutions has announced a November launch of their 360 Counter e-resource assessment service, along with an opportunity for NEBASE members to take advantage of pre-release pricing through December 15.

360 Counter is the first service that enables you to assess usage in combination with costs so that you can make better decisions. It automates the workload associated with aggregating, manipulating, calculating, reporting and archiving usage data from Project COUNTER reports and your library's e-resource cost data.
