New Lower Pricing for Nebraska Overdrive Group

Entry Categories: Discounts

Attention! If your library was interested in participating in the Nebraska Overdrive group but you didn’t think you could afford it, it’s time to take another look!

The Nebraska Library Commission is pleased to announce that we will now be able to subsidize the Nebraska Overdrive group at a higher rate than originally anticipated. This means that each participating library’s initial and ongoing costs will be lower. Costs will also be more predictable and consistent from year to year since they will be based on population served and FTE as opposed to previous year’s usage.

The Nebraska Library Commission has also determined that it will be able to handle remote patron authentication on behalf of libraries running systems like Follett. This will eliminate the need for these libraries to purchase and set up their own proxy servers.

Cost Breakdown

NLC will contribute the following funds to the project:

  • One-time cost of $28,000 to get the group web site set up by Overdrive.
  • Yearly maintenance fee of $12,000 for this year and each year of the group hereafter.
  • Initial content purchase of $20,000 for the group.

Libraries participating in the group will pay annual subscription fees based on the following formulas:
  • Public Library pricing will be $0.07 per population served, with a minimum cost of $500. (This means that libraries with fewer than 7,140 population served would pay the minimum $500.)

  • Academic Library pricing will be based on FTE: under 500 FTE = $500; 501-2,000 FTE = $1,500; 2,001-10,000 = $2,500. Call for more than 10,000 FTE.
Overdrive has agreed to waive the additional “per library” integration fee for Nebraska libraries joining the group at its outset. This fee may be applied to Nebraska libraries joining the group in subsequent years.

Subscription fees will be used to purchase content on an ongoing basis. Content purchased by the group will be added to the collection, and will consist of best-selling titles from over 150 publishers.

Overdrive Digital Library Reserve® is a web-based digital media platform that enables library patrons to download popular digital content, including digital audio books, from your library's web site.

Overdrive digital audio books can be downloaded to a PC/laptop, burned to CD, or transferred to a wide variety of portable devices, including most MP3 players, smartphones, and car stereos. Patrons download and enjoy their selection anytime and anywhere via the web, so the process is virtually hands free for library staff.

These digital books may be checked out for a limited period of time, downloaded to the patron's device and are automatically returned to the collection when the checkout time expires. The library does not need to purchase any additional equipment to provide this remote service to patrons.

We would like to formalize the Nebraska Overdrive group by the end of the August. To read more about Overdrive go to www.overdrive.com

If you have questions about the shared Nebraska Overdrive group, or to let us know you want to participate, please email Shannon White or Susan Knisely.

The NEBASE Dewey Group includes the print versions of the Abridged Edition 14 of the Dewey Decimal Classification and the 22nd edition of the unabridged Dewey Decimal Classification.

OCLC is offering 10% off of the original price on the DDC 22 and Abridged Edition 14 in print.

Dewey on the Web

Now your library can benefit from web-based access to an enhanced version of the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) database through WebDewey or Abridged WebDewey. OCLC is offering a discounted price to users who join the NEBASE Dewey Group.

WebDewey and Abridged WebDewey, which correspond to the unabridged and abridged print editions, are updated on a quarterly basis, bringing you ongoing updates implemented by the Dewey editorial team almost as soon as they occur. The Web versions also offer additional electronic functionality not available in the print editions to make your classification work more efficient.

The NEBASE Hour is a FREE, monthly, online information session on OCLC products and services. For more information and to register to attend this session, go to the Nebraska Library Commission Training Portal, and do a keyword search for "WebDewey".

Welcome to the New N3!

Welcome Nebraska librarians to the new version of the N3 newsletter.

In the Fall 2006 NEBASE Survey you asked for more timely information, as well as information in the form of a blog. With this new version of the N3, Nebraska Library Commission Network Services News, we are responding to both of these requests.

Previously N3 was published online every other month. Now, it will be continuously updated with content. We will post new items as we write them or as new content is made available to us from OCLC or our other library partners. This should help keep you up to date with everything happening in all areas of Network Services including, NEBASE, OCLC News, Databases, Training, Discounts and more.

Also, you can now subscribe to N3 via an RSS feed and have the posts go directly to your RSS aggregator service. You no longer need to go find our web site, the content will be pushed directly to your own account. You can also provide us or the library community with comments about any N3 post.

We hope this new method of delivery will meet each of your needs. Please let us know what you think of the new N3.
