NEBASE Closure

Yesterday was NEBASE’s last official day as an OCLC network and this will be the closing post to N3.

The Nebraska Library Commission would like to thank NEBASE members for their support over the last 33 years. We would like to thank those who served as our representatives to Users and Members Council, those who served on the NEBASE Advisory Council, and past and present NEBASE staff.

Remember, your final NEBASE billing for June will be sent by us around the middle of July. Future invoices for OCLC products and services (except for CatExpress, WebDewey, and NetLibrary) will come from BCR.

Christa Burns will continue to coordinate group purchases of CatExpress, WebDewey, and NetLibrary.

For all other OCLC products and services as well as technical support, you will need to contact:

NEBASE Members to Transition to BCR

As announced previously, the Nebraska Library Commission’s NEBASE department will cease to exist as an OCLC network in July 2009. Under OCLC’s new Partner structure, OCLC member libraries may go to any OCLC partner or directly to OCLC for billing, ordering and training.

After talks with several OCLC networks, consultation with the NEBASE Advisory Council and much consideration, we have made the recommendation to transfer Nebraska OCLC libraries to BCR (Bibliographical Center for Research) for the initial transition in billing, renewals and ordering. At any time after August 1st, libraries may request to be transferred to another OCLC Partner or go directly to OCLC.

BCR, founded in 1935 and headquartered in Aurora, Colorado, has been a provider of OCLC products and services since 1976 and will continue to be an OCLC Partner for billing, marketing and training. OCLC member libraries using BCR’s services currently are found in Alaska, Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. Staff from Nebraska OCLC member libraries will be able to attend BCR’s OCLC training—online or in-person at any location—at BCR member pricing. Libraries may learn about OCLC training opportunities through BCR’s training calendar or through a new national training calendar that OCLC will host starting in July 2009.

Under the new Partner system, Nebraska OCLC member libraries will be billed for OCLC cataloging subscriptions, ILL subscriptions, etc., without any added network administrative or membership fees. Price quotes for the coming fiscal year will be issued next week.

NEBASE will continue to handle invoicing through the June 2009 activity (invoices sent in July). Renewals, ordering, training and technical support will continue through June 30, 2009. Effective with your July invoices (sent in August 2009), your invoices will come from BCR. As of July 1, 2009, all technical support calls should go directly to OCLC (1-800-848-5800) and BCR will provide billing support assistance.

The Nebraska Library Commission will continue to coordinate CatExpress and WebDewey group purchases. NLC will also continue to provide access to statewide database subscriptions through NebraskAccess. And NLC will continue to negotiate vendor discounts and purchasing of other electronic resources for Nebraska libraries individually or in groups.

OCLC announces the Expert Community Experiment

In response to requests from the cataloging community, OCLC is introducing the Expert Community Experiment which enables cataloging members to make more changes to WorldCat records.

During the Experiment, members with full level cataloging authorizations have the ability to improve and upgrade more WorldCat master records than has been previously possible. The Experiment begins in mid-February 2009, and is expected to last six months.

Introductory web information sessions will be held throughout February for those interested in participating in the Experiment.

OCLC to convene Review Board to Discuss WorldCat Record Use Policy

OCLC Board of Trustees and Members Council to convene Review Board of Shared Data Creation and Stewardship

DUBLIN, Ohio, USA, 13 January 2009—OCLC Members Council and the OCLC Board of Trustees will jointly convene a Review Board of Shared Data Creation and Stewardship to represent the membership and inform OCLC on the principles and best practices for sharing library data. The group will discuss the Policy for Use and Transfer of WorldCat Records with the OCLC membership and library community.

The purpose of this Review Board is to engage the membership and solicit feedback and questions before the new policy is implemented. In order to allow sufficient time for feedback and discussion, implementation of the Policy will be delayed until the third quarter of the 2009 calendar year.

New OCLC user guide available....Authorities: Format and Indexes

Authorities: Format and Indexes provides details on selected topics that catalogers need to identify and verify information in bibliographic and/or authority records via the OCLC authority file.

Authorities: Format and Indexes
contains detailed authorities-related information that can assist the following library staff:

  • Fully authorized NACO (Name Authority Cooperative Program) participants who lock, edit, and replace master records, and add new records.
  • Cataloging users at NACO institutions who lock and edit master records prior to verification by authorized NACO users at their institution.
  • Cataloging users at non-NACO institutions who edit and save authority records locally and verify names and titles when updating and/or enhancing WorldCat™ bibliographic records.
  • Public services, reference, resource sharing, and acquisitions staff who verify names and titles for local use or for interlibrary loan.
This new 62 page user guide supersedes the former Authorities User Guide.

OCLC CatExpress provides copy cataloging with limited editing capabilities at a low, flat-fee subscription price. With CatExpress, your library can search WorldCat, set and delete holdings, enter information in optional data fields, print labels, retrieve MARC records for loading into your local system, and track your library's usage with the Monthly Transaction Reports.

Attend this session to see a live demonstration of this easy to use, web-based interface to OCLC's WorldCat. And hear about the special NEBASE offer of a free trial month of the OCLC CatExpress service to new subscribers.

OCLC's new Web Harvester captures Web content to add to digital collections

OCLC is now offering the Web Harvester, a new product that allows libraries and other cultural heritage institutions to capture and add Web content to their digital collections managed by CONTENTdm software. OCLC’s Web Harvester addresses the need to store and provide access to otherwise highly transient information resources that solely exist on Web sites.

OCLC’s Web Harvester evolved from collaboration with several state libraries, state archives and universities over a period of seven years. Participants emphasized the increasing importance of collecting and managing Web-based content as information resources move online, yet remain within libraries’ and archives’ collection scopes.

The Web Harvester is integrated into library workflows, allowing library staff to capture content as part of the cataloging process. The captured content is then sent to the organization’s digital collections where it can be managed with other CONTENTdm digital content.

Next Generation Cataloging - Renee Register, OCLC Global Product Manager, Cataloging and Metadata Services

OCLC has launched the Next Generation Cataloging and Metadata service pilot project. It will explore the viability of capturing ONIX metadata upstream from publishers and vendors and enhancing that metadata in WorldCat. A variety of academic and public libraries, publishers and vendors will participate in the pilot. The pilot will provide a way to store, enhance and normalize publisher metadata for the benefit of both library and publishing communities. Statewide Open Source ILS Symposium Moved to Bellevue University

We have moved the Statewide Open Source ILS Symposium, scheduled for Thursday, May 22, to Bellevue University in order to accommodate the overwhelming number of registrations.

We invite all Nebraska library staff interested in learning more about open source ILS solutions for libraries to attend the meeting. This new venue will allow more to attend, so please go ahead and register for the event.

This day-long learning opportunity will feature presentations from vendors that support open source solutions for libraries, as well as librarians who are currently responsible for the implementation of shared open source catalogs. It should be a great opportunity to ask questions and explore possibilities!

New WorldCat Collection Analysis Scenarios Available

Two new OCLC WorldCat Collection Analysis Best Practices scenarios are now available.

Annual Collection Review shows how to use WorldCat Collection Analysis to make and support informed decisions on which titles to retain, weed, and acquire as a result of an annual collection review.

Introduction to Using Excel® provides a brief introduction to some of the more common actions within Microsoft Excel®, and is designed to help those who are unfamiliar with Excel® gain familiarity with working with spreadsheets.

A new edition of OCLC’s Local Holdings Primer is now available. Titled A Holdings Primer: Principles & Standards for Local Holdings Records, it replaces the earlier edition, Primer: MARC 21 Format for Holdings Data.

OCLC Connexion Client End of Life

If you use the Web-based Connexion browser interface or you are a CatExpress user, you can ignore this message. This message applies only to users of the Windows-based Connexion client software.

The end of life date for Connexion client versions 1.70, 1.72 and 2.00 is April 1, 2008.

Starting on April 1, you will no longer be able to log on with version 1.70, 1.72 or 2.00. If you still have version 1.70, 1.72 or 2.00 on your machine, you are seeing the upgrade warning when you start the client now.

Please upgrade to version 2.10 at your earliest convenience.

If you have version 1.70 or 1.72 on your machine, upgrade directly to version 2.10. You can upgrade to version 2.10 without installing the intermediate versions on your machine. OCLC suggests that you uninstall the previous version of the client before installing version 2.10.

Local Holdings Offline Product Announcement

The OCLC Local Holdings Offline Product is now available.

The OCLC Local Holdings Offline Product (LHOP) replaces the old SULOP (“Serials Union List Offline Product”) used for many years by OCLC members participating in the old union listing system (now migrated to Local Holdings Maintenance).

Individual libraries can order a tab delimited file of all of the local holdings they currently have in WorldCat from the online order form on the OCLC website. Once produced, the tab delimited file will be available for download from the Product Services Web and can be imported into a spreadsheet package. If your library has more than 20,000 local holdings records, multiple files will be provided with up to 20,000 records in each file. There is no charge for this report.

A Quick Reference guide is available and covers the order process, how to download the file, and information on how to import the file into Microsoft Office Excel.

Below is a brief list of the data elements that will be included in the file.

From the bibliographic record:
OCLC Number
Title of Item from the bibliographic record (245 $a)
ISBN/ISSN (020 $a or 022 $a) - the data will be preceded by a label identifying it as either an ISSN or ISBN
Place of Publication (260 $a & $b)
BLvL - Code from the Bibliographic Level element in the bibliographic record
Form - Code from the Form of Item element in the bibliographic record
SrTp - Code from the Type of Serials element in the bibliographic record

From the Local Holdings record
LHR Summary - Note: There is only one summary per bibliographic per institution regardless of the number of LHRs that the library has attached to the bibliographic record. If a library has multiple LHRs attached to a single bibliographic record each LHR will appear on a separate row and the summary field will be repeated in each row.
LHR Leader – Note: Each element from the leader will be preceded by label that identifies the item. Data will always appear in the same column for all LHRs in the file.
LHR 007 – Codes from the Physical Description field.
LHR 008 - Codes from the Fixed-Length Data Elements General Information . The complete set of 32 characters from the 008 will be included.
For ease of sorting, in addition to being included in the complete 008 field, the Lending (008/20) & Reproduction (008/21) policy codes and the Date of report (008/26-31) will be broken out into separate columns.
LHR 852 (Location) – The field tag, indicators, and all subfields will be included as they appear in the LHR at the time the data was extracted. Subfield delimiters will appear as ‘$’
Holdings Information – Fields from the LHR that describe the library’s holdings including Electronic Location (856) and Holdings Data (853-878). Each field will be in a separate cell and will include the field tag, indicators, and all subfields from the field. Repeatable fields will appear in separate cells (for example if there are two 863 fields each 863 field will appear in a separate cell within the file). Subfield delimiters will appear as ‘$’ Position of the data will be dependent of the fields that are contained within the LHR.

Connexion client versions 1.70, 1.72 and 2.00 will be discontinued on April 1, 2008. Connexion client versions 1.70, 1.72 and 2.00 users will receive an upgrade warning message each time they start the client software. This warning will continue to display each time you start version 1.70, 1.72 or 2.00 software until you upgrade to version 2.10. Until April 1, you can bypass this warning and continuing using client version 1.70, 1.72 or 2.00. As of April 1, you will not be able to log on with Connexion client version 1.70, 1.72 and 2.00.

DDC Online Training

OCLC is developing an online set of DDC training materials focused on the needs of experienced librarians who need Dewey application training. They may also be useful as supplementary materials in other Dewey training contexts, e.g., teaching Dewey to LIS students.

All course materials will be made available on the Dewey Training Courses web site at no charge. The presentations and exercises assume the availability of the latest version of the DDC database (i.e., WebDewey), and a professor, trainer, and/or experienced Dewey user for offering explanations and fielding questions. The materials will include a basic course on the structure and use of the DDC, plus a series of short modules based on special topics (including a general overview).

Currently available for the Basic Course:

  • Introduction to Table 1

Short Modules available:

NLC Web Sites Down Saturday January 5th

IMPORTANT NOTICE!

All Nebraska Library Commission web sites, including NebraskAccess and Nebraska Memories, will be down for 10-12 hours on Saturday, January 5th, beginning at 6am.

This power outage is due to electrical work being done in the Atrium building and affects all NLC web sites. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause to your own services.

1. If your library links directly to the database resources from your own library web site, and does not go through or login via the NebraskAccess web site, the power outage will NOT affect your use of the resources.

2. Libraries that use the NebraskAccess web site to link to the databases can use direct links and passwords during the outage. If your library has IP access, you will not need the usernames and passwords from within the library.

3. For those libraries and patrons that use the NebraskAccess web site to link to and login to the databases, you may use the direct links to login to select resources during this time.

A message with the direct database links and passwords has been sent to all Nebraska Library Commission mailing lists. If you did not receive this message, please contact the Reference Desk for the information at 800-307-2665 or 402-471-4016. Please note that the Commission closes at 5:00pm tonight.

OCLC Connexion Client version 2.10 available for download

This message is for users of the Windows-based Connexion client only; it does not impact the Web-based Connexion browser users.

Connexion client version 2.10 is available for download from the Software download area of Product Services Web. You will be required to upgrade to version 2.10 by April 1, 2008. An upgrade warning message will begin appearing when you start version 1.7x or 2.00 beginning in early February 2008.

If you have been using version 1.7x, you can use the enhancements from version 2.00 in addition to the enhancements in version 2.10.

Special Event on Optimizing Technical Services Workflow

NEBASE members are invited to attend an exciting workshop being offered by the Missouri Library Network Corporation (MLNC).

"From Selection to Access: Optimizing the Collections/Technical Services Workflow" will be held in St. Louis on October 17, 2007. The workshop is being presented by R2 Consulting, a company that specializes in library workflow analysis and implementing change.

In this session R2 Consulting staff, Rick Lugg and Matt Barnes, will discuss:

  • Coping with smaller technical services staffs, continuing budget pressures, and demand for electronic resources
  • Rethinking current operations and viewing the technical services workflow in its entirety
  • Applying a business approach to productivity and throughput

R2 has worked with many libraries and vendors to analyze workflows and data flows, and has developed principles, methods, and tools that lead to improved performance. The session will include examples drawn from R2's experience, practical advice, and techniques for analyzing your institution's workflow.

What is it? -- Authorized Genre and Form Headings

After much discussion, the Library of Congress will finally start issuing authority records for genre/form headings in September. Since the MARC 655 tag, "Index Term--Genre/Form," was introduced in 1995, catalogers have used a number of sources for headings, the two most common being Library of Congress Subject Headings and Guidelines on Subject Access to Individual Works of Fiction, Drama, Etc. (better known as GSAFD). However, catalogers have long asked for authority records for headings specifically meant to designate what an item is instead of what it is about.

OCLC will start receiving the new authority records to load after September 11. Some of you may have noticed the new authority searching option, "Genre," in the Connexion 2.0 release.

In addition to the authority records, LC has also drafted a new instruction sheet (H 1913) for Subject Cataloging Manual: Subject Headings. These first instructions cover assignment of genre and form headings to moving images specifically and provide examples such as "Survival television programs." Instruction sheets for assigning genre and form headings to other subject areas will follow later.

OCLC does not expect to discontinue 1.7X until a future release of the client is available. You are not required to upgrade to 2.00.

However, OCLC recommends that you upgrade to 2.00 to have the most current features available:

  • Display your toolbar on two rows
  • Use shorter menus: Edit, Action, View and Tools menus are rearranged
  • Use Z39.50 access via the client to retrieve bibliographic records from your local system to create authority records or add bib records to WorldCat
  • Use RLIN21 keyboards for Arabic, Cyrillic, Hebrew, and Latin scripts
  • Use Unicode control characters for Arabic and Hebrew script cataloging
  • Use automatic switch from non-Latin to English mode for delimiter and subfield code
  • Use Institution records.

New Certificate Program

Do you need to brush up on your cataloging skills? Have you become responsible for cataloging formats that are new to you? Now you can participate in workshops that will acknowledge your time and effort with a certificate from the Nebraska Library Commission.

The Cataloging Certificate Program offers two levels of certificates: Basic and Advanced. For the Basic Certificate, a participant must complete the Understanding MARC 21 Bibliographic Records workshop plus four additional workshops from an approved list within a three year time period. For the Advanced Certificate, a participant must have a Basic Certificate and complete another four workshops from the list within a three year time period.

First step in merging RLG Union Catalog with WorldCat complete

Phase 1 of the RLG Union Catalog integration into WorldCat is complete.

Phase 1 involved matching RLG Union Catalog primary cluster records against WorldCat and adding new WorldCat master records for titles in the RLG Union Catalog not already represented in WorldCat. In this phase, OCLC processed 50.4 million records and added 7.8 million new master records.

The “Status: RLG Union Catalog Integration into WorldCat” Web page has a complete set of statistics for Phase 1 as well as a tentative schedule for Phases 2 and 3.

OCLC WorldCat Collection Analysis Speakers Series

This message is to remind you that you are invited to join us on Tuesday, May 1st, from 2:00 – 3:00pm EST (1:00pm-2:00pm Central Time) for the first installment of our new WorldCat Collection Analysis Speakers Series. Throughout the year, OCLC will offer Webinars that feature current WCA users who will share with us real-life examples of ways they are using WCA to accomplish library goals.

Paul Metz, Director of Collection Management at the Virginia Tech University Libraries, will lead off this series by discussing his use of WCA to study and improve his libraries’ collections from both macro and micro perspectives. By comparing Tech’s holdings to the holdings of fellow Southeastern Research libraries, whose data were available in the ASERL group subscription, Paul was able to determine whether Tech's collections differed from peers in desirable or undesirable ways in terms of subject, age, and language. Though overall the analysis results were encouraging, Paul will discuss some of the specific kinds of collection deficiencies that can be detected using the tool. He will then show how Tech used the same data to identify widely held recent books that were good candidates for purchase.

OCLC to Pilot WorldCat Local

OCLC is piloting a new service that will allow libraries to combine the cooperative power of OCLC member libraries worldwide with the ability to customize WorldCat.org as a solution for local discovery and delivery services.

The WorldCat Local pilot builds on WorldCat.org, which allows Web access to the world's richest database for discovery of materials held in libraries. Through a locally branded interface, the service will provide libraries the ability to search the entire WorldCat database and present results beginning with items most accessible to the patron. These might include collections from the home library, collections shared in a consortium, and open access collections.

WorldCat Local will offer the same feature set as WorldCat.org, such as a single search box, relevancy ranking of search results, result sets that bring multiple versions of a work together under one record, faceted browse capability, citation formatting options, cover art and additional evaluative content.

The WorldCat Local service interoperates with locally maintained services like circulation, resource sharing and resolution to full text to create a seamless experience for the end user. WorldCat Local will also include future enhancements to WorldCat.org including more than 30 million article citations, and social networking services.

"WorldCat Local offers OCLC member institutions a way to leverage the ongoing investments that OCLC is making in WorldCat.org, within their local environment," said Chip Nilges, OCLC Vice President, Business Development. "As we add new features to WorldCat.org--and as OCLC member libraries add new content to WorldCat--those features and that content will also become available within WorldCat Local."

The WorldCat Local pilot will test new functionality that allows users to place requests, gain online access, or request an interlibrary loan within WorldCat.org.

The University of Washington Libraries will be first to pilot WorldCat Local with OCLC in April. Other institutions will follow. OCLC will examine results of the pilot to determine a production schedule.

Bill Jordan, Associate Dean of University Libraries, University of Washington, said the University of Washington Libraries "has purchased or licensed an amazing number of high-quality information resources for our users, but we've hidden them in multiple silos with little or no integration between them. Our job is to take those quality resources and make them convenient for the user to find and use--to make quality convenient. WorldCat Local appeals to me as a platform that I can use to address those strategic concerns."

"With WorldCat Local, we get enhanced search and display capabilities like faceted browse, FRBR-ized results sets, and enhanced content like reviews and article metadata," said Mr. Jordan. "We bring together all our fulfillment options--electronic, locally held, consortial, and remote--into one interface that still leverages all the 'delivery smarts' that are built into our local and consortial systems. With the addition of article metadata, we begin to see the breakdown of our discovery silos by the aggregation of indexing for book and article content."

"Finally, WorldCat Local provides a syndication platform so that we can meet users at their point of need," said Mr. Jordan. "We have to complete the discovery-to-delivery chain no matter where the user starts out. It's here, in syndication, that OCLC is uniquely positioned to work with Microsoft, Yahoo! and Google on behalf of libraries in a way that nobody else really can."

OCLC will test interoperability with systems used by participating pilot libraries, including Innovative Interfaces, SirsiDynix, and ExLibris Voyager.

The NEBASE Hour for May 2007 is "Cataloging with CatExpress".

The NEBASE Hour is a FREE, monthly, online information session on OCLC products and services. The NEBASE Hour is held on the first Wednesday of the month, from 11:00 am-12:00 noon (Central Time) unless otherwise noted.

The NEBASE Hour is a live presentation, available at no cost, that you will access from your own computer via the Web. Audio is available via Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). You may ask any questions you have during the session. The session will be recorded for anyone who may want to see it again or who cannot attend it at the scheduled time. IMPORTANT: Please note that we are using new web conferencing software - Centra. Please read the information below this announcement for details about technical requirements and procedures for accessing live online sessions through Centra.

OCLC CatExpress provides copy cataloging with limited editing capabilities at a low, flat-fee subscription price. With CatExpress, your library can search WorldCat, set and delete holdings, enter information in optional data fields, print labels, retrieve MARC records for loading into your local system, and track your library's usage with the Monthly Transaction Reports.

Attend this session to see a live demonstration of this easy to use, web-based interface to OCLC's WorldCat. And hear about the special NEBASE offer of a free trial month of the OCLC CatExpress service to new subscribers.

The session will be conducted by Christa Burns, OCLC Member Services Coordinator for NEBASE. Participants will receive 1 hour of CE credit. There is no cost to participate in this session.

INTRODUCING CENTRA LIVE! This Online Session will be conducted using Centra Live web conferencing software. For this reason it is crucial that you review the Centra Live technical requirements and perform the recommended Centra system check even if you've successfully attended previous Nebraska Library Commission Online Sessions. (Previous sessions used Genesys and Live Meeting software.) Please do this several days in advance of your scheduled session so you have plenty of time to update your system if necessary. Technical requirements (including a link to the system check) and general access instructions are available on the Nebraska Library Commission Online Sessions webpage.

AUDIO NOTE: Audio for Centra Live online sessions will be handled via Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology, as opposed to a telephone conference call. This means access to a telephone is not required. However, in order to hear the presentation attendees must be using a computer with a sound card and speakers. To ask questions and participate in class discussion, attendees will also need a microphone. If you don't have a microphone for your computer, you may request one from the Nebraska Library Commission by emailing Jeannette Powell at least a week in advance of your session. If only one individual is attending the session from a particular computer, a headset may be used in place of the speakers and microphone.

Connexion Client version 1.60 End of Support

Connexion Client version 1.60 End of Support April, 15, 2007

OCLC will discontinue Connexion client 1.60 on April 15, 2007. As of this date, you cannot log on with client 1.60. To verify your version number, go to the Help menu and select About OCLC Connexion Client. OCLC released client 1.70 in December 2006.

Connexion client version 1.72, released in March 2007 includes several enhancements along with the changes to resolve problems associated with Microsoft Windows update KB918118. You can upgrade directly to version 1.72 without installing version 1.70. Both versions 1.70 and 1.72 are supported by OCLC.

Virtual Reality Impacts LC Subject Headings

Avatars has long been a Library of Congress Subject Heading, but its usage was limited to a representation of God or gods. Since the term avatar is now used in virtual reality to describe the animated alter ego of a participant, the Library of Congress revised the existing heading and created a new one. The current headings are Avatars (Religion) and Avatars (Computer graphics).

OCLC Connexion client 1.72 now available

OCLC has released version 1.72 of the Connexion client. The information from the client known problems page is below.

New interim version of the Connexion client is available (version 1.72); addresses several problems

Connexion client version 1.72 is available to download and install. This interim version resolves the following problems:

  • In 1.70: Microsoft Windows auto-update KB918118 that prevented record display
  • In 1.70: Validation problems with Bengali, Devanagari, Tamil, and Thai
  • In 1.70: Export problem that added incorrect subfield information in field 035 when more than one OCLC control number is in the field
  • In 1.70: Missing graphics for the macro recorder toolbar
  • In 1.71: CJK problem with entering Chinese, Japanese, and Korean script character using the IME

OCLC recommends:

  • If you are using 1.60, upgrade directly to version 1.72 before the end-of-life date for 1.60, April 15.
  • If you are using 1.70 with the 1.71 patch and do not need the fix in 1.72 for entering CJK script, wait for the release of version 2.00 to upgrade. 2.00 is planned for release mid-year.
  • If you are downloading the client for the first time, download and install the complete 1.72 client software.

Important reminder! Uninstall current client version(s) before upgrading to 1.72: If you previously installed a patch for your version of the client and want to upgrade to 1.72, please remember to uninstall both 1.70 and 1.71 or both 1.60 and 1.61 before installing 1.72. Uninstall either one of the pair first; order of uninstalling does not matter.

OCLC will continue to support version 1.70, the 1.71 patch, and interim version 1.72 after April 15, when you will no longer be able to log on using 1.60.

Instructions for installing 1.72:

  1. Open your browser to http://psw.oclc.org/software.htm
  2. Enter your OCLC authorization and password.
  3. Click the link for Connexion client only version 1.72 software or Connexion client 1.72 complete software.
  4. Scroll to the end of the OCLC Software License Agreement and click I Agree.
  5. The download window should display the file name xxxxx.exe or xxxxx.exe. Click Save and specify a folder on your workstation where you want to save the file. Be sure to remember the folder location for the next step.
  6. In Windows Explorer, open the folder where you saved the file and double-click it to start the setup program.
  7. Follow prompts to complete the installation.

WorldCat Collection Analysis: Best Practices Scenarios

WorldCat Collection Analysis: Best Practices Scenarios is a new series of automated demonstrations of how one can use WorldCat Collection Analysis to address common library projects.

OCLC has posted the first scenario, Analyze Collection Gaps, to the WCA webpage.

It can be found on the right sidebar under the heading “Ways to use WorldCat Collection Analysis.” OCLC will continue to announce new scenarios as they are produced.

The second scenario, Digitization Project, will be posted within the month.

Welcome to the New N3!

Welcome Nebraska librarians to the new version of the N3 newsletter.

In the Fall 2006 NEBASE Survey you asked for more timely information, as well as information in the form of a blog. With this new version of the N3, Nebraska Library Commission Network Services News, we are responding to both of these requests.

Previously N3 was published online every other month. Now, it will be continuously updated with content. We will post new items as we write them or as new content is made available to us from OCLC or our other library partners. This should help keep you up to date with everything happening in all areas of Network Services including, NEBASE, OCLC News, Databases, Training, Discounts and more.

Also, you can now subscribe to N3 via an RSS feed and have the posts go directly to your RSS aggregator service. You no longer need to go find our web site, the content will be pushed directly to your own account. You can also provide us or the library community with comments about any N3 post.

We hope this new method of delivery will meet each of your needs. Please let us know what you think of the new N3.
