OCLC Connexion Client version 2.10 available for download

This message is for users of the Windows-based Connexion client only; it does not impact the Web-based Connexion browser users.

Connexion client version 2.10 is available for download from the Software download area of Product Services Web. You will be required to upgrade to version 2.10 by April 1, 2008. An upgrade warning message will begin appearing when you start version 1.7x or 2.00 beginning in early February 2008.

If you have been using version 1.7x, you can use the enhancements from version 2.00 in addition to the enhancements in version 2.10.

Enhancements in version 2.10 :

  • Use new macro commands GetListCellData and GetListCellDataUnicode to retrieve data from lists
  • Set an option to be warned before you export when unlinked non-Latin fields are present in a record
  • Select one of multiple headings in a bibliographic field to lock a linked authority record
  • Control genre headings in fields tagged 655 second indicator zero.
  • Display language of cataloging from field 040 subfield b in WorldCat search results lists
  • See the code S for SCIPIO records in the Library type column in WorldCat search results lists
  • See the SCIPIO date of sale in hyphenated format (1899-08-19) in WorldCat search results lists
  • Export and import in Dublin Core Qualified, Dublin Core Simple, OCLC Dublin Core Qualified and OCLC Dublin Core Simple
  • Include non-Latin data in 4xx, 7xx and selected 6xx fields in authority records when Library of Congress makes this available no earlier than April 2008.

Computers in Libraries 2008 Conference Discount

The Nebraska Library Commission/NEBASE is offering a group discount to all Nebraska librarians who attend the Computers in Libraries 2008 conference. The conference is planned for April 7-9, 2008, at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City in Arlington, VA. The price of the conference with the discount is $219.00 for the three-day event (April 7-9, 2008). This is more than a 50 percent savings off the regular price. No discount rates are available for the pre- or post-conference seminars and workshops.

In addition, discount prices of $99.00 on the Internet@Schools East conference and $219.00 for the combo of Internet@Schools East and Computers in Libraries general conference are also available.

NLC Web Sites Down Saturday January 5th

IMPORTANT NOTICE!

All Nebraska Library Commission web sites, including NebraskAccess and Nebraska Memories, will be down for 10-12 hours on Saturday, January 5th, beginning at 6am.

This power outage is due to electrical work being done in the Atrium building and affects all NLC web sites. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause to your own services.

1. If your library links directly to the database resources from your own library web site, and does not go through or login via the NebraskAccess web site, the power outage will NOT affect your use of the resources.

2. Libraries that use the NebraskAccess web site to link to the databases can use direct links and passwords during the outage. If your library has IP access, you will not need the usernames and passwords from within the library.

3. For those libraries and patrons that use the NebraskAccess web site to link to and login to the databases, you may use the direct links to login to select resources during this time.

A message with the direct database links and passwords has been sent to all Nebraska Library Commission mailing lists. If you did not receive this message, please contact the Reference Desk for the information at 800-307-2665 or 402-471-4016. Please note that the Commission closes at 5:00pm tonight.

New NetLibrary Offer - SOLINET/NEBASE Public Library Shared Collection

Building on the success of the previous SOLINET Shared Collections, we are now offering a collection created especially for public libraries. This unique and exciting collection is projected to begin with 350 titles and expand to 1,000 as participation grows.

The Public Library Shared Collection is expected to include content from leading publishers such as McGraw-Hill, AMACOM, Beacon Press, Class Publishers, and Elsevier. Having no duplications of other SOLINET shared collections, the Public Library Shared Collection’s emphasis will be on 2006 and later.

The initial title list includes books on consumer advice, do-it-yourself, parenting, general science, and gardening as well as titles for children and young adults. eBooks will be available in early 2008, depending on member participation levels.

Dewey on the Web

Now your library can benefit from web-based access to an enhanced version of the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) database through WebDewey or Abridged WebDewey. OCLC is offering a discounted price to users who join the NEBASE Dewey Group.

WebDewey and Abridged WebDewey, which correspond to the unabridged and abridged print editions, are updated on a quarterly basis, bringing you ongoing updates implemented by the Dewey editorial team almost as soon as they occur. The Web versions also offer additional electronic functionality not available in the print editions to make your classification work more efficient.

To see a hands-on demo of WebDewey, you can watch the NEBASE Hour: Introduction to WebDewey online session which was recorded and is available online for you to view at your leisure. The recorded session is viewable from a web browser. You will need a sound card and either earphones or speakers. There is no cost to view this recorded session. To view the WebDewey session, go to the Nebraska Library Commission Training Portal, and do a keyword search for "WebDewey".

NEBASE Hour for February: Connexion Client v. 2.10 Enhancements

The NEBASE Hour for February 2008 is "Connexion Client v. 2.10 Enhancements".

The NEBASE Hour is a FREE, monthly, online information session on OCLC products and services.

The NEBASE Hour is a live presentation that you will access from your own computer via the Web. Audio is available via Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). You may ask any questions you have during the session. The session will be recorded for anyone who may want to see it again or who cannot attend it at the scheduled time. IMPORTANT: Please note that we are using new web conferencing software - Centra. INTRODUCING CENTRA LIVE! This Online Session will be conducted using Centra Live web conferencing software. For this reason it is crucial that you review the Centra Live technical requirements and perform the recommended Centra system check even if you've successfully attended previous Nebraska Library Commission Online Sessions. (Previous sessions used Genesys and Live Meeting software.) Please do this several days in advance of your scheduled session so you have plenty of time to update your system if necessary. Technical requirements (including a link to the system check) and general access instructions are available on the Nebraska Library Commission Online Sessions webpage.

AUDIO NOTE: Audio for Centra Live online sessions will be handled via Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology, as opposed to a telephone conference call. This means access to a telephone is not required. However, in order to hear the presentation attendees must be using a computer with a sound card and speakers. To ask questions and participate in class discussion, attendees will also need a microphone. If you don't have a microphone for your computer, you may request one from the Nebraska Library Commission, at no cost to you, by emailing Jeannette Powell at least a week in advance of your session. If only one individual is attending the session from a particular computer, a headset may be used in place of the speakers and microphone.

Each month, three collections from the CONTENTdm Collection of Collections are featured on the CONTENTdm Web site. The featured collections for January are the University of Utah Institutional Repository, TIDES, and Francisco Goya Prints.

Included in the collection information below is a link to each organization’s record in the OCLC WorldCat Registry. OCLC’s WorldCat Registry allows libraries worldwide to manage and organize their data for vendors and third parties by creating and maintaining a comprehensive institutional profile in a single, Web-accessible location.

The Institutional Repository at the University of Utah brings together scholarly materials and institutional archive materials. A collaborative project between the libraries at the University of Utah and the University community, the Institutional Repository provides access to the intellectual capital of the University and makes these scholarly materials freely available on the Internet.

TIDES

The TIDES program is an online effort to provide access to primary resources in East Texas educational institutions, libraries, archives, museums and other cultural institutions. Partner institutions now include Mexican schools, museums and wildlife centers. It began in 2002 through a Texas Telecommunications Infrastructure Fund grant and continues to expand through an Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) grant awarded in 2005.

Francisco de Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828) was one of history's most masterful printmakers and social satirists. Pomona College Museum of Art is proud to own first editions sets of all four of his etching series, a total of 211 prints. This collection includes digital representations of all of them.

EZproxy acquired by OCLC

EZproxy, the leading software solution for serving library patrons remotely, has been acquired by OCLC from Useful Utilities of Peoria, Arizona. Useful Utilities founder Chris Zagar will join OCLC as a full-time consultant. Mr. Zagar will help ensure a smooth transition of EZproxy operations to OCLC, the world’s largest library service and research organization, and assist OCLC in developing state-of-the-art authentication services for the cooperative.

Mr. Zagar, a librarian at the Maricopa Community Colleges in Arizona, developed EZproxy to provide libraries a better solution for authenticating remote user access to licensed databases. EZproxy software allows libraries to manage access and authentication configurations through a proxy server so that library users do not have to make any configuration changes to their personal Web browsers.

More than 2,400 institutions in over 60 countries have purchased EZproxy software. OCLC will honor EZproxy's current service arrangement for existing and new customers whereby licensees continue to enjoy access to new releases of EZproxy and technical support at no additional charge.

OCLC will also continue to develop and support EZproxy by working with commercial vendors to create new connectors to authentication systems and online content resources to libraries. EZproxy version 4.1 is scheduled for release in March 2008.

OCLC FirstSearch Feature: Patron Comments

Did you know that you can allow your patrons to send their Comments directly to you when they are using FirstSearch?

By default, Comments in FirstSearch are sent to OCLC Customer Support, where library patrons are then referred to their local reference librarian. By adding a direct Reference email address to your library's FirstSearch Administrative Module, your patrons will be sent directly to you for help.

How it Works
In the FirstSearch Administrative Module, on the Authentication/Access tab, choose General from the menu on the left. At the very bottom of the page, you can enter the Reference Librarian's Email Address. Don't forget to click Save Changes button.

After you have saved this change, in FirstSearch, Comments that are self-identified as "I am a library patron" (not "library staff member") will be forwarded to this email address.

Please note that OCLC Customer Support is still available to help library staff with all questions. So please continue sending your own questions for help or feedback to them.

OCLC Research Report: Service Sea Change: Clicking with Screenagers Through Virtual Reference

Today’s “screenagers” are totally at home in the IM and chat environment. Find out what these future academic library users or non-users expect from virtual reference services (VRS) and systems and how to evaluate these services based on behavioral aspects.

Lynn Silipigni Connaway, Ph.D., OCLC and Marie L. Radford, Ph.D., Rutgers University School of Communications, Information and Library Science first presented findings from their report, Service Sea Change: Clicking with Screenagers Through Virtual Reference, at the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) 13th National Conference in April 2007.

OCLC announces three libraries set to use WorldCat Local service

Following results from several pilots, Cornell University Library, the State Library of Ohio and the University of Delaware Library have signed agreements to use WorldCat Local, a new service that combines the cooperative power of OCLC member libraries worldwide with the ability to customize WorldCat.org as a solution for local discovery and delivery services.

WorldCat Local builds on WorldCat.org, which allows Web access to the world's richest database for discovery of materials held in libraries. Through a locally branded interface, WorldCat Local provides libraries the ability to search the entire WorldCat database and present localized results most accessible to the patron. These might include internal special collections, collections shared in a consortium, and open access collections.

The WorldCat Local service interoperates with locally maintained services like circulation, resource sharing and resolution to full text to create a seamless experience for the end user.

DDC Online Training

OCLC is developing an online set of DDC training materials focused on the needs of experienced librarians who need Dewey application training. They may also be useful as supplementary materials in other Dewey training contexts, e.g., teaching Dewey to LIS students.

All course materials will be made available on the Dewey Training Courses web site at no charge. The presentations and exercises assume the availability of the latest version of the DDC database (i.e., WebDewey), and a professor, trainer, and/or experienced Dewey user for offering explanations and fielding questions. The materials will include a basic course on the structure and use of the DDC, plus a series of short modules based on special topics (including a general overview).

Currently available for the Basic Course:

  • Technical Introduction to the DDC
  • WebDewey: Basics
  • Introduction to Table 1

Short Modules available:

  • Technical Introduction to the DDC (Refresher)
  • Choice of Number Review
  • Number Building: Add Tables

Introducing Qwidget, the QuestionPoint widget

Qwidget combines the power of QuestionPoint's reference management system with the simplicity of a widget.

On the librarian side, the interface is the same as it is today, with all the tools you need to collaboratively handle chat patrons, review and refer session transcripts, and obtain reports and statistics on chat activity. On the patron side, you will be able to provide access to your chat service via a widget, which will connect to your QuestionPoint account.

Here's how it works:

When you deploy Qwidget on your library web site, your users will enter your service through the widget interface. On the librarian side, they will appear in the chat monitor inside QuestionPoint. This allows multiple librarians to use your existing QuestionPoint account to handle users that come in via the widget, along with all other patrons arriving via the web-based chat and email forms in use today. The same collaborative and administrative tools would be available as well.

What is a widget?

A widget is a small application that adds utility or other information from external sources, via html code that you add to your webpage. A common widget used by several libraries is the MeeboMe widget. Meebo is a web-based IM service. You can see the MeeboMe widget in action on the [obsolete link removed] NEBASE home page and the Nebraska Library Commission's Ask A Librarian page.

Qwidget availability:

Qwidget will be available as part of QuestionPoint. A preview version of Qwidget will be available after the next software install, currently scheduled for March 2008. OCLC plans to hold a virtual user group meeting prior to the release - details will be sent via the QuestionPoint listserv and posted on the QuestionPoint Blog.

 

Call for Proposals - MidWest CONTENTdm Users Group Meeting

The MidWest CONTENTdm Users Group (formally the Ohio CDM Users Group) Program Planning Committee invites proposals for presentations and panel discussions for the third annual meeting to be held April 29-30, 2008, in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Do you have a CONTENTdm experience to share, project to discuss, or topic to field as part of a panel discussion? If so, we welcome your proposal. CONTENTdm users from all over are invited to respond to this call. The deadline for submitting a program proposal is January 30, 2008.

Facebook application now available at WorldCat.org

The new WorldCat Facebook application provides access to WorldCat searches and user-created lists from personalized pages within a Facebook account. The application includes a home screen with the WorldCat search box, as well as quick links to WorldCat searches based on topics listed in a Facebook profile as personal interests.

The application also includes:

  • a built-in, advanced WorldCat search;
  • a panel that allows users to invite other Facebook friends to install WorldCat;
  • a “Something to Read” panel that displays books recently added to WorldCat lists; and
  • a “Favorite WorldCat Lists” panel where users track their own lists or those of other WorldCat users.

Special Webinar to Highlight OCLC's Local Holdings Service

You're invited to join OCLC for a FREE Local Holdings Maintenance (LHM) user group webinar on Thursday, February 7, 2008 from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Central Time.

This virtual meeting will present special guest speakers to discuss the many aspects of Local Holdings and how it can benefit you and your library. An update on OCLC Local Holdings will also be presented.

Guest speakers will include:

  • Jennifer Kuehn, Ohio State University, will present her library’s results after taking advantage of Local Holdings Records to set copy/loan bytes for special collections.
  • Judy Murran, OCLC, will talk about batch updating of Local Holdings Records
  • Christa Starck, OCLC, will discuss deflection and the role played by copy/loan bytes in Local Holdings Records

OCLC WorldMap: Visualizing information about collections and libraries worldwide

The OCLC WorldMap is a prototype system that provides an interactive tool for selecting and displaying international library holdings represented in WorldCat, as well as publishing, library, cultural heritage and population data.

The OCLC WorldMap allows users to select countries of interest, then to compare various library holding and data by country. WorldMap will generate interactive graphs that compare several different kinds of data for up to four countries at a time.
