Online Training Session on Searching eLibrary through NebraskAccess Scheduled for 4/5/07

Are you interested in database training but short on time? If so, you may want to attend the live one-hour "Introduction to Searching eLibrary through NebraskAccess" training session scheduled for Thursday, April 5, from 10-11am Central.

Description: eLibrary is a wonderful information resource. It boasts searchable full-text content from magazines, journals, newspapers, and reference books, as well as tv/radio transcripts, audio/video clips, pictures, and maps. It is designed to be easy to search -- type in almost any term and you will get results! As with any resource, however, the more you know about eLibrary the better your chances of getting GREAT results! If you'd like to learn more about eLibrary so that you can search with confidence and retrieve improved results, then this is the training session for you. Attendees will see a variety of search techniques demonstrated and they will also learn what search functionality lurks under the Topics and Reference tabs!

Intended Audience: Librarians and media specialists who haven’t attended the Database Roadshow, or those wanting a review. (Reminder: eLibrary is not available to K12 schools through NebraskAccess. However, media specialists at schools that have their own eLibrary subscriptions are welcome to attend.)

Digitization Training Workshops Set for April

Are you interested in learning how your institution can develop a digitization project? Join us in April for a set of workshops on the basics of digitization planning.

The sessions will be taught by University of Nebraska - Lincoln Electronic Text Center faculty and the cost to attend both days is $20.00. The fee includes class materials and lunch both days. The April workshops will be held at the the Nebraska Library Commission in Lincoln.

Introduction to Digitization
Monday, April 9 from 9:00am - 4:00pm

This session will provide a general overview of digitization project planning and execution. Topics covered will include: digitization concepts, selection, legal issues, outsourcing options, sustainability, best practices, equipment and access.

Introduction to Scanning Principles & Best Practices
Tuesday, April 10 from 9:00am – 3:00pm

This session will provide an overview of digital imaging. Topics covered will include: general principles, terminology, hardware, software, master images, access images, quality control, image delivery and outsourcing. This session will not include step-by-step scanning training.

Intended Audience

Staff/administrators of Nebraska Cultural Heritage Institutions (libraries, museums, archives) who have materials in their collections that they want to make available to the public in digital format.
Project planners.
Participants or potential participants in Nebraska Memories.
Recipients of or potential applicants for LSTA digitization grants from the Nebraska Library Commission (public libraries or public libraries in collaboration with other CHIs).

This class is NOT for students needing class credit, corporate or agency records management personnel, private citizens wanting scanning training, persons already experienced in digitization who have advanced technical questions more appropriate to a private consultation.

WorldCat.org - new citation feature helps students and researchers

Item records in WorldCat’s open-Web interface, WorldCat.org, now include a “Cite this Item” link that provides bibliographic citations in five common styles: APA, Chicago, Harvard, MLA and Turabian. Displayed in a separate pop-up window, the citations follow the reference standard for each style.

The citations window cautions users that “formatting rules within a style can vary widely between applications and fields of interest or study,” and that they should apply the specific requirements of a reviewing body.

ArchiveGrid and CAMIO Databases Now Available From OCLC

As a result of the July 2006 merger of RLG and OCLC, OCLC is now offering subscriptions to the following two databases via its CONTENTdm platform:

  • ArchiveGrid - ArchiveGridSM is an important destination for searching for historical documents, personal papers and family histories held in archives throughout the world. Developed by RLG, ArchiveGrid is an online service that provides access to detailed archival collection descriptions. It includes nearly a million descriptions of archival collections held by thousands of libraries, museums, historical societies and archives worldwide.   • CAMIO (Catalog of Art Museum Images Online) - is a premiere resource of works of art from around the world contributed and described by leading museums. The scope of the CAMIO collection ranges from 3000 BC to the present. OCLC acquires TechAtlas software with grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

OCLC has acquired TechAtlas technology planning software using a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

WebJunction, OCLC’s online community where library staff share ideas and use online resources to help them in their work, will further develop this Web-based technology management and planning tool with particular attention to helping public libraries create E-Rate compliant technology plans. E-Rate is a federal program that grants discounts for telecommunication services and Internet access to schools and libraries.

With support from the Gates Foundation, OCLC will now take over ownership of the TechAtlas product and WebJunction will begin an intensive round of design and development work to extend TechAtlas features, such as expanding the ability to allow consortia to review and approve technology plans for their member libraries.

OCLC Connexion client 1.72 now available

OCLC has released version 1.72 of the Connexion client. The information from the client known problems page is below.

New interim version of the Connexion client is available (version 1.72); addresses several problems

Connexion client version 1.72 is available to download and install. This interim version resolves the following problems:

  • In 1.70: Microsoft Windows auto-update KB918118 that prevented record display
  • In 1.70: Validation problems with Bengali, Devanagari, Tamil, and Thai
  • In 1.70: Export problem that added incorrect subfield information in field 035 when more than one OCLC control number is in the field
  • In 1.70: Missing graphics for the macro recorder toolbar
  • In 1.71: CJK problem with entering Chinese, Japanese, and Korean script character using the IME

OCLC recommends:

  • If you are using 1.60, upgrade directly to version 1.72 before the end-of-life date for 1.60, April 15.
  • If you are using 1.70 with the 1.71 patch and do not need the fix in 1.72 for entering CJK script, wait for the release of version 2.00 to upgrade. 2.00 is planned for release mid-year.
  • If you are downloading the client for the first time, download and install the complete 1.72 client software.

Important reminder! Uninstall current client version(s) before upgrading to 1.72: If you previously installed a patch for your version of the client and want to upgrade to 1.72, please remember to uninstall both 1.70 and 1.71 or both 1.60 and 1.61 before installing 1.72. Uninstall either one of the pair first; order of uninstalling does not matter.

OCLC will continue to support version 1.70, the 1.71 patch, and interim version 1.72 after April 15, when you will no longer be able to log on using 1.60.

Instructions for installing 1.72:

  1. Open your browser to http://psw.oclc.org/software.htm
  2. Enter your OCLC authorization and password.
  3. Click the link for Connexion client only version 1.72 software or Connexion client 1.72 complete software.
  4. Scroll to the end of the OCLC Software License Agreement and click I Agree.
  5. The download window should display the file name xxxxx.exe or xxxxx.exe. Click Save and specify a folder on your workstation where you want to save the file. Be sure to remember the folder location for the next step.
  6. In Windows Explorer, open the folder where you saved the file and double-click it to start the setup program.
  7. Follow prompts to complete the installation.
 

NebraskAccess Passwords Scheduled to Change April 1, 2007

NebraskAccess passwords change twice a year, on October 1 and April 1. April 1 is fast approaching. This means change is just around the corner, and that’s no joke!

In preparation for this pending change, new NebraskAccess passwords were emailed to library directors and school media specialists in early March. These new passwords are already active and will remain in effect through September 30, 2007.

If patrons login with an old NebraskAccess password after April 1, 2007, they will be prompted to contact their library or school media center for the new password. If you are the library director or school media specialist, please don’t forget to distribute the new password to staff members and patrons.

New NetLibrary Offer - SOLINET/NEBASE Shared Collection VI

In cooperation with NetLibrary and SOLINET, the Nebraska Library Commission and NEBASE are pleased to announce the launch of the 2007 NetLibrary Shared Collection VI.

About the 2007 Shared Collection VI: The 2007 Shared Collection VI will include new content from the top academic and trade publishers in subjects suited for academic and public libraries. The collection policy is similar to that of the first five collections and includes many of the same top university presses and trade and commercial publishers, as well as some newly signed publishers. The 6th Shared Collection is projected to include approximately 3,000 NetLibrary titles.

Features:

  • MARC record sets included in price.
  • No additional licensing for those who have completed eBook and Subscriber Agreements in connection with the 3rd Shared, 4th Shared, 5th Shared, or unique collection purchases since 2003.
  • Reference Center functionality will be enabled for all participants, extending to their other Reference Center holdings as well.

The following features will also be available to subscribers:

  • Wide number of titles available from more than 325 publishers (see NetLibrary's TitleSelect for complete catalog). Please view the NetLibrary List of Publishers. Virtual Reality Impacts LC Subject Headings

Avatars has long been a Library of Congress Subject Heading, but its usage was limited to a representation of God or gods. Since the term avatar is now used in virtual reality to describe the animated alter ego of a participant, the Library of Congress revised the existing heading and created a new one. The current headings are Avatars (Religion) and Avatars (Computer graphics).
