Library Commission Distributes State Aid to Nebraska Public Libraries

Nebraska Library Commission Director Rod Wagner recently announced the distribution of state aid to public libraries across Nebraska. This funding enables the Library Commission to continue to work in partnership with Nebraska libraries, using state aid funds appropriated by the Nebraska Legislature, to help public libraries grow and develop.

The Nebraska Library Commission annually provides direct state aid payments to eligible public libraries. This money augments local support for library services and has been used by local public libraries to boost their print and non-print materials, increase access to electronic information resources, and develop programming for young people, among other things.

The allocation amounts for state aid to public libraries is subject to change, and is dependent upon state budget appropriations. On December 15, State Aid award letters were mailed to all eligible libraries, indicating the amount of the state aid payment for 2002. Award amounts are based on other public funding sources and population.

Census figures for 2000 are used for determination of service populations. Awards were determined, based on decisions made during the Fall 2001 special session of the Nebraska Legislature that resulted in reductions in state agency budgets. The Library Commission's Operations and Aid Program budgets were reduced by 4% in the current fiscal year (FY 2002) and 5% in FY 2003.

The Nebraska Library Commission congratulates the public libraries listed below as they move forward toward the realization of this vision for the future: "Affordable, reliable, progressive, and equitable library service for all Nebraskans regardless of their economic status and geographic location." As the state library agency, the Nebraska Library Commission is an advocate for the library and information needs of all Nebraskans.
